Adams & Madison via Airline/Star Lake/Valley Way 5-22-10

Trail Conditions: Airline was essentially snow free, just a few stretches of hard packed snow a quarter mile before breaking out in the open on Durand Ridge. Easy rock hopping on dry boulders up to summit of Adams. Star Lake Trail down to Madison Spring Hut was mostly dry, just a few patches of snow as we approached the lake. Again, easy rock hopping on dry boulders up to the summit of Madison. The first mile on the descent of Valley Way was precarious with slick, unconsolidated snow…..quite a few people slipped and postholed on their way down. Once past the mile of snow, Valley Way gradually dried out and a good pace was again possible. One mother-of-a-blowdown about half way down on Valley Way….required a mini bushwhack to circumvent.

Special Equipment Required: First hike of the season in trail runners……we had them on all day and they worked just fine. Sunscreen was necessary today.

Comments: Quite a few clouds, temps were very mild….maybe in the lows 60s up top….with decent views and minimal winds. Bugs were around today but not really on the warpath. Met quite a few friendly Quebecois. Madison Spring Hut still closed. Excellent tail gate party back at Appalachia!
