If you've ever wanted to see an authentic kayak up close and personal, you no longer need a ticket to Greenland or Alaska or a time machine. Alaska Natives visiting Harvard's Peabody Museum in 2003 discovered a 140 year old Alutiiq kayak in the museum's collection. It's available for viewing while museum staff work on conserving it. Eventually it may go on long-term loan back to a museum in Alaska.
One of my all-time favorite Alaska experiences was attending an open-air display of various Native boats being built at the Alaska Native Heritage Center in Anchorage. A book and video were produced and are available from the Heritage Center.
