I just walked this both ways on Wednesday and Thursday of this past week. I thought it was mud season all over again.!!! Wicked muddy almost everywhere. Took me 4:45 going south and 3:50 coming norht the next day. 10.6 mile trek each way. there were about 11 of us in the shelter and it must have been the caretakers day off because they never came around to collect their fee. I met about 8 through hikers on the trail and at the lean-to. One said he expected to climb Katahdin on September 28th. He figured he had to average 13 miles per day to get there. That will be tough in the whites but shouldn't be a problem later. Some parts of the trail were nice walking but it was mostly very muddy. I met about 8 people the first 45 minutes!! A lot of folks on the trail.
