Are any of you Mainers familiar enough w/ the arcana of the unorganized townships to know what are the official names of the townships in which Mt Abraham in Franklin County, and Black Mountain in Hancock County, reside? From the topo maps & the Delorme guide, I had thought they were Mt Abram Twp and T10 SD, respectively, but I wonder if Maine did some restructuring in the last decade.

I'm trying to tag all of my pictures (where possible) with the US Census Bureau's FIPS codes so I can do some database processing on them.

The good news is the FIPS codes are all online: http://geonames.usgs.gov/domestic/download_data.htm

The bad news is they seem kinda messed up for Maine. (For New Hampshire everything seems to be fine; I had some problems w/ township spellings e.g. Dixs Grant vs. Dix's Grant, Wentworths Location vs. Wentworth Location.) A bunch of towns are listed in Knox County that should be in Oxford County, but I can deal with that. But then it seems like some other stuff has been lumped together, e.g. East Hancock = FIPS #23-20405 = USGS Feature ID #582456, and East Central Franklin = FIPS #23-19865 = USGS Feature ID #582453.

Maine Dept of Revenue's list of unorganized territories seems to mirror the old USGS topo maps; but Franklin County doesn't list Mt Abram Twp or Salem, and Hancock County doesn't list T10 SD, and the newer topo maps at the 1:100K scale don't seem to show any boundary line between Mt Abram Twp and Salem Twp http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=13&Z=19&X=248&Y=3110&W=3 whereas if you zoom in, there is a boundary and both Mt Abram and Salem Twp are listed (though USGS shows it as Mt Abraham Twp = T4 R1 BKP WKR) http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=12&Z=19&X=496&Y=6220&W=3

Ditto for the Black Mtn area: the 1:25K scale USGS maps http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=12&Z=19&X=711&Y=6172&W=3 show dividing lines between T9 SD and T10 SD, but the 1:100K ones don't: http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=13&Z=19&X=356&Y=3086&W=3

Why should we care? because the Census/USGS data gets used for all other sorts of purposes, e.g. Topozone's browse/search for Hancock and Franklin counties. (and the messed-up one for Knox county which includes a bunch of townships that should be in Oxford County.)

sigh... every time I try to get rigorous with my record-keeping, I seem to uncover Problems with the System...
