Otter River, Mass Avatar: Leisurely winter hike o
Date: 2-10-13

Conditions: 2-3' of powder below treeline. Broke trail behind two barebooter along Cascade Link to Spellman. Broke trail up Spellman. Lots of ice under snow, which didn't bond at all to ice. Very slick in many spots. Had to innovate and try new routes around icy areas. Pumpelly to from Spellman to Sarcophagus was drifted, but from here to summit mostly bare rock with deep snow pack in hollows and wooded sections so we barebooted this section. White Dot well trodden but very loose. Talked with others who broke out Lost Farm, Cascade Link, White Cross and they all experienced similar conditions.

Special Equipment: Snow shoes below treeline, bareboot, hillsounds above treeline. Snow very loose yesterday on packed out trails so tough going with all foot ware. Other normal winter gear.

Comments: Beautiful sunny day. S side trails getting sun became very sticky on way down. Surprised how much snow blew off ledges above treeline. Lots of folks out today. Road to Park is very narrow right now, lucky to get two compact cars by each other so plan accordingly.
