Mt Moosilauke via Glencliff

Date of Hike: 5-8-10

Trail Conditions: A few blowdowns along the climb from Glencliff trailhead to junction with Ridge/Carriage Road. Bare ground most of the way up. No snow/ice until 3,200 feet, then mostly a corroding monorail several hundred yards before and a hundred feet after the boulder field below South Peak. A monorail a foot or so deep for first quarter mile heading up Ridge, as Wolfgang noted earlier this week. Entire summit area is essentially snow-free.

Special Equipment Required: Left the crampons and snowshoes behind and never missed them. Took the microspikes but never needed them. Barebooted w/o difficulties all the way. Hiking poles were helpful while crossing the streams on Glencliff and for balancing atop the unsteady monorail. Wore a poncho on the way up and a shell on the summit.

Comments: Light rain with temps in the mid 40s at the trailhead. No rain, slight breeze, and temps in the mid 30s on the summit. Thick cloud cover killed visibility today, but no problem since I know where everything is anyway. Saw just one other hiker today who was ascending as I was coming off the summit.
