Owl’s Head via Black Pond and Brutus Bushwhacks
Date of Hike: January 23, 2010
Trail Conditions: All trails are well-packed and in good shape for snowshoes. The Bushwhack routes are obvious and in good shape. I ran into 5 others, so they are even more packed. Water crossings are all good, and the crossing by the Lincoln Brook Trail over Lincoln Brook was solid and had tracks across it. So that might be a good option if one does not want to travel via Black Pond. For the Black Pond Bushwhack there are two parallel routes broken out: the obnoxious “orange” route and more westerly route. They begin together at the Black Pond and then converge just before reaching the Lincoln Brook Trail.
Special Equipment Required: Used snowshoes the whole way. (Crampons went along for the ride.) Depending on conditions and usage some of the steep parts going up to Owl’s Head may need crampons soon.
Comments: Beautiful day and thanks to all of the previous trailbreakers.
