Date of Hike:4/7/12
Trail Conditions: Only a little muddy and wet lower down, but mainly dry. A few icy sections on the Smarts Brook Trail as it ascends through woods--my guess is that these patches will melt this week. Icy snow and plain old ice on Sandwich Mt trail from intersection with Smarts Brook trail. A couple of water crossing--no problem at all.
Special Equipment Required: Barebooting is fine up to intersection with Sandwich Mt trail. Microspikes were great on that last section up. Still a fair amount of snow and ice--the spikes were perfect. Poles helpful for icy stretches.
Comments: Optional - Good long hike (11.4 miles) to shake off the cobwebs and stretch our legs. That last mile is a killer though. A nice day with temps in high 30s. Hardly anyone on the trail--kind of surprising, for a Saturday.
