Smarts Brook Trail 1/10/09--Rte 49 to the "big rocks"
Trail Conditions: 3-6 + inches of lovely fresh fluffy snow on top of hard packed snow. Snow levels increased with elevation.
Special equipment needed: you can certainly bareboot the first mile or so, but I wore snowshoes the whole time and was glad to have them, as the snow got deeper and deeper. Poles were nice, and waterproof boots. Warm clothes, the usual.
Comments: Although this was not a peak, I have to say it was one of the nicest winter hikes I've done. Quiet, calm, not well-traveled, particularly past the xc ski trail end--it felt isolated and private. Many animal tracks--deer, moose, rabbits, and a coyote (I think?) that used the Smarts Brook trail for miles. Clear day, much warmer (22) than the high of 13 predicted.
