Here is a good write-up on the Sony NEX-5n, a mirrorless camera with an APS-C sized sensor.

I have owned this camera since late last year, and have really enjoyed it both for hiking and non-hiking use. "Focus peaking" makes it easy and fun to use old manual focus lenses. The optional EVF is great. A small camera, so you might want to try one before buying. But image quality from the 16mp sensor is excellent.
I just acquired the Sigma 19mm F2.8 (Sigma also makes a 30mm F2.8 for NEX) and will take it hiking soon.
