    Questions about Greylock

Wow, how frustrating. I was lucky, we found the deer tick already attached. Not sure for how long, but did keep it. Will take it along with me for the appt. No bullseye yet, but the area is still red, nearly two weeks later. Figured, better to be safe than sorry. I know Lyme can be quite...

    Questions about Greylock

Man, that is a LONG time to be on an antibiotic! They can be extremely rough on the liver depending on what you are taking. I think it's a two to three week regimine on doxy for Lyme if caught early enough.

    Questions about Greylock

Ugh, I haven't been on antibiotics for years (after a root canal). I completely forgot about the sun. Crap... I'm not a religious sunscreen user (yes, my bad)...

    Questions about Greylock

That's a given. My BF pulled a deer tick off of me a week ago. Taking a trip to the doctor tomorrow to check out the bite. I'm sure she'll put me on doxy as a precaution. :(

    Questions about Greylock

Thanks for all the info. Good to know all this info. Usually I hike w/ Phoenix off-leash because he sticks close when he has his pack on and has a great recall. However, with four girls to run herd on, I'm thinking I don't want to worry about keeping an eye on him at the same time. He's a...

    Questions about Greylock

Thanks Jay. I'm thinking of doing Greylock this trip and next year when they come, do both a ADK peak and another Western Mass hike. I guess I picked Greylock b/c of the war memorial and the views of VT, NY and MA. They are very curious about everything. Figured on one full day of...

    Questions about Greylock

Thanks for the info. I guess I forgot to ask one other important question...can we take my dog along on the hike. He's a seasoned hiker and while has a great recall, will be onleash with me keeping an eye on the kids...mainly so they don't kill each other, we are talking about 4 girls. ;)...

    Questions about Greylock

My young nieces will be visiting in June for their 2nd annual "Aunt Di week of fun". The girls range in age from soon to be 7 to 13. They all enjoy the outdoors and I took them hiking last year up in the Adirondacks. Since their last visit I have moved closer to the MA border and was thinking...

Who: hikes, climbs &or backpacks with a dog?

Oh, yes, Vohard methods take lots of time and dedication. What I love about them are that they don't just focus on "training" but understanding the dog and his drives/responses. Because I didn't know much about Phoenix's past when I got him, this worked well for both of us. Intimidation would...

Who: hikes, climbs &or backpacks with a dog?

I'm another fan of McConnell's books. I also agree that a dog w/ issues should not be trained w/ an e-collar. Unless used properly, even on a "stable" dog, the results can be disasterous. I too have a rescue dog that came w/ some baggage. However, despite being an abuse case (imbedded...

Creating a Monster (For Dog Owners)

Maddy...LOVE Dr. Dodman. His books are really good. And my comment is not about overtiring a dog...it's about getting your dog sufficient exercise (both mental AND physical) for his or her activity level. I could run my dog until the cows come home, but without any mental stimulation, he's...

Creating a Monster (For Dog Owners)

I can completely understand your problem. I adopted the energizer bunny, 16mo. old german shepherd in August '07. I have never seen/owned such a high energy shepherd. And I mean, HIGH energy. I try everything under the sun to get him exercise. I have a dog walker come at lunch time to go...

New Trail on Lyon + Mtns. you love to return to.

You have a choice At the start of the new trail, there are a few downed branches small trees to "deter" hiking the old trail, but no postings NOT to hike it. We hiked up the new trail to figure out where it went, but then descended the old trail. Thclimer has hiked the trail this past...

Taking my dog to Maine to hike/vacation

If you knew my dog, you'd know that ain't happening...he's the energizer bunny with ants in his pants. I'd get snagged in a heartbeat!

Taking my dog to Maine to hike/vacation

Bignslow - GREAT trip report! Thanks for the information! We'll be trying to so as much hiking with the dog as possible, so some of the ladder trails will be nixed except for the one day we plan to drop him off at the day kennel. Maddy, thanks for your recommendations. I've been told we need...
