    Hydration Bladder Question

a little tip...either insert the tube into the bladder when not using or insert a folded wire hanger into the bladder (be sure not to poke the bladder of course by taping the pointed part). this way the sides won't stick to each other and the nastiness that can ensue will be prevented.

Bringing gas containers across the border?

doesn't work for airlines. had a horrible experience at Denver airport. had hiked the grand canyon with an MSR whisperlite multi-fuel stove. had cleaned and washed the bottle as well as all gas lines. wife and I had backpacks on in the airport and that's all we had and the backpacks looked like...

    Looking for Koflach Degre owners!

Go for the XL. I had a Large in Lowe Alpine and i had to fight the gaitor to stretch it over the Koflach Arctis Expe. I dumped that gaitor and bought an OR gaitor in large. sizes vary from brand to brand, but you won't go wrong with an XL for a double plastic boot like degre.

!!??blister preventor that actually stays stuck in place??!!

why not try er... ladies' hose as the base layer under your socks. You may also want to wrap duct tape around the ankle back to the heel to keep it in place.

    ski poles/self arrest

It is indeed a compromise but the best compromise thus far. The pick seems fairly decent for self-arrest. For what it is worth, Chad Kellogg, a fomer park ranger at Mount Rainier national park used it successfully for speed ascents of the hill

    ski poles/self arrest

Petzl makes an ice axe with a telescoping pole...you might want to look into that. That way you have a proper self arrest tool as well as a hiking pole. Edit: its called the snowscopic...a tad pricey I must add ($129 at mountaingear and amazon).

What to pack for a winter day hike

bivy bags are tricky. I believe it was Reinhold Messner who said, if you have one, you are likely to go seek trouble so that you can use it.

    Looking for Koflach Degre owners!

Scarpa Invernos are clunkier than, say, Degre or Arctis expe, but Scarpa Alpha is lighter and has a much sleeker profile. For moderate zero degree cold alphas will do the job. Just remember, alpha has a narrower last than invernos so if you have wide feet (E or above) alphas won't fit well.

winter peak bagging with non insulated boots

well, winter boots won't be crampon compatible, i.e. winter boots don't have vibram soles. that's all. if crampons are not a consideration then sure, go with winter boots...$60 bucks instead of $200 plus.

True confessions - They're funny cuz they're true.

Napoleon Dynamite would read this and say: "Gosh....idiot. you guys are retarded" great thread. A lot of you should stay away from sharp objects. My story is pretty embarassing...I had already filled up my "pee" bottle on a cold (20 below) night and decided to use a ziploc bag. in fact I...

winter peak bagging with non insulated boots

the problem with individual results with boots is that they are, as the word suggests, Individual. everyone's circulation is different. Why not try Scarpa Alphas as a double plastic boot? $149 at sierratradingpost at the moment and they have a decent range of sizes still available. p.s. I am...

    Winter Sleeping pad choice

I second the thermarest PLUS foam pad combo. tried and tested in winter camping. you don't want to be without a pad if the thermarest conks out on you due to a leak. p.s. also think about carrying a patch kit, although duct tape may also help if the thermarest springs a leak

    Blisters

duct/duck tape. not kidding. if they don't heal, just cover them with duct tape to minimize direct friction.

    Looking for Koflach Degre owners!

I've noticed that scarpa alpha is much narrower than scarpa inverno. if you have wide feet like I do, invernos are a better choice. koflach arctis is definitely warm, and wider than alpha. I wore it in december on Mt. Rainier. Everyone else in the group who wore Degre was complaining of cold...
