Coming between a doe and her fawns

I'd be a little wary, or at least try to seem as non-threatening as possible - even with a deer, I think. I was in Alaska to do some climbing in Denali during the calving season for moose, and the backcountry rangers warned us that they were pretty deadly where their offspring are concerned...

    Grivel G10

I've found that the best way to fit crampons to boots is to bring the boots to a gear shop and try them on there. I've occasionally went through most of the crampons in the store before one style fits just as I like it. More often than not, the employees are excited to be helping out...

    Hiking & Marathon Training

Last October/November I ran three marathons and an ultra while doing a good bit of hiking. I found them to be complimentary, and would often do a decent hike in between my long runs. I found that it helped with my leg strength, and just getting out on the trails to hike made it easier mentally...

Boston's Wilderness House Under New Owners

I was just in there this afternoon. Thus far most everything is about 20% off, with backpacks and tents at 25%. Things were pretty busy, and items like helmets, crampons, and ice axes were selling out quickly.

    Anyone use igloos or....

I spent 5 days on Mt. Rainier in April in a snow cave that two of us dug out in about three hours. This served as our camp for the entire time, and at one point we spent 24 hours in it waiting out a storm that literally tore a nearby tent apart. This was by far the most comfortable winter...

Redfield - Is it best to start at Upper Works or ADK LOJ?

I climbed Redfield from Upper Works and had a fairly easy time of it. The trail was reasonable and I found the herd path from there pretty easy to follow. At the time, it was only about my fifth bushwack. Calamity Pond is cool place to pass, as well.

    Backpack on airplanes?

I've done both for backpacking/climbing trips with no problems. If I check just the backpack I make sure all of the straps are pulled tight and I either take off the hipbelt and put it inside or just tighten it. Recently I've bought a huge duffle and just throw the backpack inside of it...

    Lightweight boots

Vasque makes some pretty cool shoes that stand up to a lot of abuse. I've bought two pairs of their Catalyst Mids., and used them for anything from spring snowshoeing to light backpacking to fast 20+ mile days in the Adirondacks. The really cool thing about them is that they have incredibly...

    Donaldson and Emmons - 5/7, 5/8

Thanks to Neil, RiseAboveHiker and Raymond for the info on the Sewards. Leaving Boston late on Saturday, I arrived at the trailhead by about 7:30 PM. After a quick, mostly dry hike to the campsite just past the junction with the truck road, I got into my bivy bag to enjoy what I thought would...

    Sewards herd path info, please

I'm heading up to New York next week to hike the last six (I hope) of my 46. I'll end up finishing in the Sewards, and was wondering if anyone could give me a little info. on the Calkins Brook herd path; where it starts, what its like, etc. - I've never been in that area. Thanks
