    Community Water Safety Course?

When I took Basic Water Safety through the Red Cross, it was a one day course, half of which was spent in the water.

    Community Water Safety Course?

Tom, Getting and maintaining the certifications is the biggest pain of the guide license. And of course sending in the money!!! :D

    Community Water Safety Course?

Tom, You might want to contact NYSOGA anyway. I'm pretty sure you don't have to attend the whole weekend. You might be able to show up just for the water safety course. As for the test, you won't find any sample tests, but it's pretty easy. One question I remember is: On NYS Land, what type...

    Community Water Safety Course?

Tom, Contact the New York State Outdoor Guides Association. They hold an annual conference where, among other things, they offer all the courses needed to obtain your guiding license. One of the courses they offer is a water safety course that qualifies with the state. Unfortunately, the...

    Cascade & Porter 9-26-04

Well, my friend Tim and I finally managed to coordinate ourselves for a trip to the high peaks. We had limited time so we figured we would climb Porter & Cascade since I needed Porter and he needed both. We hit the trail at 7:10 hoping to beat the crows. It worked well, because we saw very...

Bear containers are coming to ADKs

My container fits perfectly in the bottom pocket of my Kelty pack. It's almost as if the pocket were made to fit a bear canister.

    fall weather

Your guess is as good as anyone's. I was in the high peaks the first weekend of october one year and there were several inches of snow on the ground. The very next weekend it was in the 70's. Your best bet is to plan on some snow and if there is none you get a bonus!

    Lunch

sardog1, You don't actually eat the whole brick of that cheese do you? I was introduced to it last summer when we visited Norway. One slice of that stuff is like a meal. I gave my Dad (who is a cheese lover) a brick of that last year and he is still working on it!!!

    Forestry questions

    1. The short growing season is part of the reason for the stunted growth, but you'll find that the height of the krumholtz is about the depth of the average snowpack. The snow helps protect the trees from the harsh winter elements. 2. No idea here, I will defer to others.

Ausable Clob road to Ausable Lake

I rode the bus once back in 1992 on a trip up Sawteeth. We rode it in and walked out. Sometimes I still wish it was there, but the road does make a nice warm-up.

    Daypack for backpacking trip

Just curious as to what everyone uses for a daypack while on a multi-day trip. Do you attach a daypack to the outside of your backpack for use on summit trips or just use a fanny pack. I can't imagine fitting everything I carry on a day hike into a fanny pack for summit trips, but I hate...
