Trail conditions and best route to test my ski pulk

Hi I am a novice XC skier, looking for a good and somewhat longer route to test pulling my pulk on skis. There are two routes I have in mind: From 302, take Zealand trail, Ethan Pond trail via Shoal Pond to Still water junction. I've never been on Shoal pond, and saw that there are couple of...

Colden via Lake Arnold, December 28, 2010

The trail is well packed all the way to the false summit. Snow field above the alpine zone sign is hard packed by the elements, you could hardly see or leave any tracks. The trail in the col is broken but soft packed. No big snow drift to negotiate at all. Very windy at the summit, no views of...

Van HO as usual is a well packed highway. The trail up Phelps is packed, and the upper section is very icy. The entrance to Tabletop's herdpath is obvious and the rest the path is packed too. Thanks Neil!! :) We both used MSR snowshoes with aggressive crampons at the bottom, and found that...

    Another tracking ID help, please

Whike hiking up Big Slide trail in ADk, we saw an animal track in the middle of the trail for a good mile or so. Here is a picture of the print, about 2.5-3" long, and here is the gait it made, almost in a straight line. Thanks

Abraham (ME) Bridge to the trailhead

We didn't made it to the trailhead, but was turned around at the first bridge we encountered. The bridge seems very iffy to cross. But based on this awesome report, I guess you can walk from here. You'll come to this bridge right after you take the left at the fork. Pic 1, pic 2, pic 3, pic 4...

4/11: Northern Presi via Tuckerman and Valley way.

From Pinkham to Tuckerman floor, thin slushy snows (it was a warm morning). Bare-bootable but I put on microspike for traction. The Sluice up to the top of the ravine: nice soft snow, easy to kick in. Great climbing conditions. Crampons will be a good idea . Washington to Madison Hut were...

ADK #46 Babeh!! Saddleback and back!

After my miserable Seward Range hike, I was all set to finish my ADK 46 on either Haystack, Basin or Saddleback, either one would make a great peak to finish. Many interesting hiking options were discussed to make this a memorable finish but I ended up picked the most ridiculous option which may...

    Marshall and Seward Range 10/8-10

What would my life be if I don't hike? I love that almost every Monday when I'm still nursing my aching knees from a weekend of hiking, I'm on a long email thread planning the next weekend. It's so good to have friends that share the same passion. Just before last weekend backpacking trip to...

No, I did not climb Lincoln’s Throat Slide in winter!

But I climbed Osceola Slide on Monday (9/8/08). When NH_Mtn_Hiker invites you to a hike, you don’t suggest a trip like Mt Tecumseh via the ski trail. It didn't take me too long to come up with Osceola Slide, given that this man knows the slide like the back of his hand. We hiked in from East...
