Snowpack this year along the AT in Connecticut?

What kind of snowpack there is right now in Connecticut along the AT? I was thinking of hitting that area for a section hike early this season, and although snow is fine, don't want to hit it with lots mushy snow and deep ponding. Being from NH I have no idea what its like over there. Thanks.

Has the Kinsman Ridge section of the AT north of Kinsman Notch (RT 112) reopened?

Earlier this year, the 3 or so miles north of the AT north of Kinsman Notch was closed due to last fall's fire, and the AT was being rerouted to use the Gordon Pond trail. I called the US Forest service today, and the woman I spoke to said she thought the Kinsman Ridge section of the AT was no...

Great lighting and conditions on Mt. Lafayette Sat 1 30 2016

You can find many more photos and full trip report here Last Saturday, I was able to take a trip up Mt. Lafayette. I was actually not even sure the extent to which I could hike that day given some family situations. After squaring things away at home, I headed north and decided to pull over at...

Grand Canyon South Kaibab Trail April 13, 2015

The focus of my photography and hiking while out in the Southwest was to try capture some of the great trails by combining some golden hour landscape shots from famous viewpoints with stuff from along the trail. During my first full day at Grand Canyon (April 13, 2015 forgot to put date in...

    Zion Narrows April 20 2015

I have always loved when people posted their out of New England reports and photos here so I figured I'd do the same. This past mid-April, I had the good fortune to visit the Southwest and have 8 hiking days. I missed a full year of "regular hiking" (march 2014-mar 2015) due to a significant...

    Glowing Thunderstorm Clouds

I didn't want to hijack J & J's thread about rainbows but I too had a pretty nice thunderstorm experience last night. Right after the storm rolled through, I was reading the bedtime story to my daughter by the open window so we can hear the peepers (frogs) out here in rural NH. She interrupted...

Mt. Washington records last night (2/15/2015)

WMUR story mentioning that Mt. Washington was tied for second coldest place on earth air temp last night (-35F) behind the South Pole and its strongest wind gust, 141 mph, since 2008. I guess the MWOBS forecast was spot on (so that made about -100 windchill). This is an impressive stretch of...

NH Firetower's List Question- Monroe Hill, Fox Forest, Hillsborough

Does anyone know if you need to reach both the existing tower AND/OR the highpoint for the NH Firetowers list? And where generally is the high point? I hiked both today, or so I think. The tower is standing and obvious, but obviously not the high point. Since the spreadsheet said "standing +...

    Favorite Photos from Winter 2013-2014

While we are waiting for all this snow to melt and even longer for flowers to start to emerge, does anyone want to share their favorite pictures from this past winter? There has been a strong tradition in the Top Ten of the year and the Spring Wildflower threads, why not start a new tradition...

Franconia Ridge For Me, Friday 3/7/14

Little Haystack Mountain, Mt. Lincoln, Mt. Truman, Mt. Lafayette Trails: Falling Waters Trail, Franconia Ridge Trail, Greenleaf Trail, Old Bridle Path It’s been a winter with not a lot of good above treeline days, at least in my book. Last Friday promised perfect visibility and tolerable...

No Franconia Ridge for me, just the folks in jeans (Falling Waters falls after snow)

Date of Hike 11/11/13 Trail: Falling Waters Trail Due to family work schedules, I only had a short window first thing in the morning to hike. The higher summits forecast for the day said: in the clouds with snow showers, temps in the single digits, winds 60-80 mph rising later, heavy...

    Rattlesnake Sunrise Shots

Golden Hour on Golden Pond (Squam Lake) Fall is a good time for sunrise or sunsets. Both because of the lower angle of the sun and most importantly they aren't too early or late to go and see! West Rattlesnake is an easy hike in the dark, .9 miles of the mostly smooth Bridal Path. There...

    Sledders on Winter Trails

In the spirit of the lively "Giving way on trail with snowshoes" thread, what's the deal with sledders on winter trails? Does anyone else see them as a safety risk for uphill travelers? Seriously. Last winter, I had to jump off trail on the steeps off liberty as a group barreled down on...

Sunrise Shots from Mt. Major 10/14/2013

Despite my romance with the coyotes of Belknap county and having come face to face with a massive bear at 30 foot distance a week ago on the 3 ponds loop, I put aside my fears of things that go howl and growl in the night, and headed up the pitch black Mount Major Trail at 5:40 am yesterday. I...

    Church Pond Trail fixed!

Redliners rejoice! The once dreaded Church Pond Trail, (no longer a loop, the eastern part is closed), that heads 1.1 miles to church pond from campsite 19 at Passaconaway Campground is now in delightful shape! Crews have installed extensive new bog bridging with commercial grade materials...

Rob Brook Trail -- Redliner Question

I noticed that the Rob Brook Trail off Bear Notch Road near the Kanc and Swift River trails is not listed on the newer 29th edition spreadsheet. Is that a mistake, or is there a reason it was taken intentionally off the list? Do I need to hike it to be a redliner? I had started the endeavor...

Kedron Flume water crossing after rain?

Does anyone know if the crossing on the Kedron Flume trail would be potentially undoable after a decent rain like last night? Was thinking of doing a big TFW loop that way tomorrow (sunday 6/9), and deciding whether to take Kedron or just stick with Ethan Pond both ways. (trying to maximize...

Memorial Day Snow on Moosiluake 5/27/13

When I was a boy of eight, I once daydreamed during a hot, muggy Memorial day family cookout that it would start to snow and blanket everything. I dismissed it, even then, as impossible. Yesterday it happened: Well I know it certainly isn’t impossible for it to snow in the Whites in late...

    Isolation Sat 3/2/13

A group of 3 of us will be giving Isolation via usual winter route (Rocky Branch/Engine Hill Bushwhack/ Isolation Trail) a shot tomorrow. We aren't looking for extra partners, but figured I'd just put that out there if people were thinking about heading out there (running out of time to finish...
