    Fatality on Mt. Guyot

Same. I hear people complain all the time about sweating and their puffy not being warm anymore. Idea...don't hike/climb in it. I rarely have more than my mid- to heavy-weight base layer and a shell when climbing or hiking strenuous sections. Sometimes no shell or just a base layer and vest if...

    NH Rattlesnakes Article

Very, very northwest tip of CT where Mt. Frissel trail from MA enters CT. Trail goes through a section called "Rattlesnake Hill." It is very appropriately named.

Solo hiking a badge of honor?

I hike solo almost all the time, rarely is it ever "alone" until you get into the shoulder seasons and winter and even then, depends on the route. Case in point, I hiked Liberty and Franconia Ridge on Friday by myself but that sure as hell wasn't solo/alone. I do like the solitude of hiking...

Long Sleeve Shirts: Heat, Bugs, Humidity?

I’ve been wearing a Stio long sleeve button up. Fairly fit cut, but not binding. SPF 50 and has a little stretch. Can roll up or down the sleeves and open up the front or button it up as needed. Versatile, and in a stylish plaid, if I say so myself.

Looking for backcountry camping opportunity near waterfalls.

This is a good one. I believe it's called Bear Rock Falls. Another cool thing is as you hike north from the campsite/falls, you're on a ridge eastward looking a valley. I've stayed here 3 times and have had a beautiful undercast every time. The falls aren't huge but it's so cool having stream...

No Treads on NE Trail Conditions - NH

Thanks everyone and sorry to go missing after posting...work sucked and it's been desks, planes and airports versus mountains, streams and trails. To be honest when I started the thread, i hadn't looked at the VFTT Trail reports in a while so hadn't realized that post volume was down as much...

No Treads on NE Trail Conditions - NH

Usually this is packed with trail info. Only seeing two threads in addition to Darren's stickies. My browser or actually no activity there? Thanks.

    Flat Mountain Pond Trail

Right on, super helpful. My son and I were going to be in Presi's or Franconia/Garfield Ridge this weekend but looks like it's a one-night fishing outing here or Wachipauka instead. Thanks Kerry

    Flat Mountain Pond Trail

Anyone been on this recently? Heard last year that it was overgrown and a bit of a route challenge, at least on the portion heading west to the pond. Thanks.

    Boot / Crampon Questions

Tom, IMO, the Hillsound Crampon Pro is going to cover 95%+ of what you'll run into in the Presi's...it's damn near a full crampon and if you were strapping to a slightly stiffer boot, probably covers 98%. But as Sierra said, keep an eye on conditions as you get closer to the hike. This is one...

    Polar Insulated Water Bottles

Anyone have any experience with these in winter? Will they keep water from freezing? Was just pulling out my bulky OR bottle jackets and saw my insulated bottles from summer riding/racing. Certainly easier to pack/carry. Anyone? Bueller?

    Falling Waters Trail

I'll have them w me but any obvious crampon sections or is it pretty bare rock on haystack?

    Falling Waters Trail

Anyone been up/down FWT since the storm last weekend specifically? In winter generally? Seems like I've always been up/down Old Bridle or Liberty Springs in winter but was thinking quick Liberty/Flume/Haystack loop for Saturday morning. Thanks.

And if yes, the greatest density is where based on time of the summer? Thanks, guys/gals.

Good Hike To Do w/ My 9-Year Old Son

Thanks Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'll let you know where I end up. I've been to the beautiful 13 Falls via Garfield>Twin Brook and hiked out Lincoln Woods. I'm afraid the 8 mile in/out (especially out) on Lincoln won't be quite exciting enough for my kid...it was kind of a boring...

Good Hike To Do w/ My 9-Year Old Son

First "real" backpacking in a couple weeks and looking for a couple suggestions. I'd like to get him to a "wow" location and a nice tent site w/o killing him. Somewhere that has a swimming hole nearby would also be an attraction but not a requirement. We'll be in NH so NH Whites would be a...
