    deer ticks

My Doc positively identified the tick on me as a deer tick and it was definately very visible. Good point about how small they can be, though.

    deer ticks

Ticks on me... For the first time ever, in NH, I had a deer tick on me last week. I live in Claremont, NH and I'm pretty sure I either picked it up while looking for wild plants with my daughter or over on Mt. Ascutney. If we have them here, you can bet they are in the Whites. Because I...

    Presidential Traverse

My original post was a description of the route we are doing and an invitation to join us. Not trying to begin a debate on the merits of one route vs. another ;)

    Presidential Traverse

This is our Plan... We are doing the "short" version (down the Crawford Path) on June 21st. The plan is to stay at Dolly Copp and on the way up spot a car at the Ammo parking lot and at the base of the Crawford Path. Saturday we'll head up the Daniel Webster Trail. Saturday, when we are...

    The carbon footprint of hikers

Maybe a bike...? I did not know this! I wonder if they allow bikes on the bus? It would be fairly easy to get to some of the closer trailheads that way, if you are geared up for touring. Hmmmm...

    keeping wet snow off crampons

Hey, Knock It Off!!! Take your ice axe (or whatever, but trekking poles are too light) and hit the inside of your foot periodically to knock it off. On a steep down climb do it every step just to avoid any potential for buildup that could lead to slipping.

    Trails near Winnipesauke.

Boy Scout Camp There is a Boy Scout Camp in Gilmanton Ironworks called Hidden Valley that has a great network of trails that tie in with many of the bigger lakes peaks including Mt. Major. Much of the property is under easement and is accessible for hiking. Around the camp there are some...

How do you deal with your back problems?

Pt That's interesting...I just got back from my first ever visit to a Physical Therapist. I've suffered from back pain off and on since I was 17 and after all of the shoveling this winter I just couldn't shake it any more. So, I paid a visit to my doc who prescribed lots of drugs (I'm not a...

    Keeping toes toasty

My experience has been that they stay in place very well UNLESS you wash and dry them in the drier (my bad). Washing is okay but the heat from the drier seems to do something to them. They are designed to go over your socks and I don't mind them at all. And I'm very sensitive.... I like the...

    "Hikers Welcome" ?

Again, thank you all for your valuable input. I am going to check it out by myself on a hike this summer and use a different location for the kids, on another trip. One of the nicest things about living in this area is that there is no shortage of great hikes!

    Winter Stove Favorites

Stove and Wood I voted "other". I use a white gas stove (MSR Whisperlite International or Simmerlite) as my primary cooking tool but I like to use a fire for some items like kielbasa as an appetizer or to make breads.

    MSR Fuel Pump Problem

The new pumps are so much better than the old (gray) pumps. I would guess that it is a defect and trade it in. Or call customer service, although my most recent attempt met with less than satisfactory results, my normal experience is that they are great about taking care of the customer. I...

The move to wool as a base layer

Smartwool I've been wearing Smartwool midweight top and bottoms this season and have been very happy. They feel (to me at least) more comfortable when damp and the dry time hasn't seemed to be much more than poly stuff. I also like the idea of using something that is from a renewable resource.

    "Hikers Welcome" ?

Thanks Papa Bear! I actually have used your journals a great deal in planning hikes especially last year when we did the section from 25a to the Dartmouth Skiway etc. Also when we did the AT from someplace in Bridgewater VT to Hanover. Very detailed and helpful!

    "Hikers Welcome" ?

In anticipation of $4.00 gas prices by summer I am planning on doing more local hikes/backpacks in my local area. Local area, btw, is the Conn. River Valley between VT and NH. Fortunately this is a hiking mecca and there is lots I haven't seen and much that I don't know about inspite of it...

    Gloves w/ Wrist Guards?

They may interfere... In my work we encourage the use of wrist guards for snowboarding and skating but find that they interfere with pole use for skiing (especially x-country skiing). Learning to fall correctly, ie. use as much of the body to spread out and absorb the shock as possible, can be...
