date: 12/12/12
trails: jewell trail, gulfside trail, trinity heights connector, jefferson loop trail
conditions: jewell trail from the cog had some ice in the first .3 then a dusting over frozen trail until upper elevations where there was more continuous ice with some snow over the top. to treeline was much of the same with more snow and rime on the rocks and a few packed drifted sections. gulfside was mostly crusty rime type snow over rock with rime covered flows of ice. we followed the cog tracks much of the way where footing was better due to more collected snow. a bit of icy glaze on the rocks below rime around the summit area. more of the same to jefferson with generally good crusty snow and occasional patches of exposed ice.
equipment: we put on microspikes at treeline and wore them to the summits and down jewell until the ice ended. with all the exposed rock microspikes were pretty much perfect, but some of the hard ice pushed them a bit. crampons should still be carried in case conditions change.
comments: a real treat of a day above treeline. cold and in places pretty windy, but never more than would be expected on a mid winter day. headed down jewell just as cloud came in to envelope the summits. thanks to cynthia for a great day out.
