Conditions: Other than one blow-down to crawl under, the Jewell Trail is now broken out and in good shape all the way to the Gulfside Trail.

Special Equipment: We began our trek at Marshfield Station on snowshoes. After hiking about 30 minutes, the broken-out trail ended and the free-ride was over! So we began alternating trail-breaking on snowshoes to just beyond the point where you emerge above tree-line. From that point forward, we continued to break trail. However, we then changed to crampons since there are a lot of icy patches on the boulders on the way up to the Gulfside Trail.

Comments: Today was such an exceptionally beautiful weather day. And, with such a rare treat, it was tough for Zman and me to decide where to go. Since winter is officially over, we had no self-imposed “pressure” to complete a 4K peak. So, ultimately it was decided to just amble up the Jewell Trail and go at least to the viewpoint where you break out above tree-line.

After breaking out of tree-line, we decided to extend our hike by meandering up to the Gulfside Trail. We took our time to soak-in the views on this marvelous sunny day. Once we reached the base of Mt. Clay it was getting late and the winds were beginning to pick up. So, we felt we’d already had more than our fair share of good views & good fun and decided to call it a day.

Six photos from our trek are located HERE.
