Carters & Hight, via 19 Mile/Carter Dome/C-M/N. Carter/Imp/Bushwhack – 5/17/2008

Route: Nineteen Mile Brook Trail, Carter Dome Trail, Carter Moriah Trail, North Carter Trail, Imp Trail (south ), bushwhack

Trail Conditions: Nineteen Mile Brook Trail from the trailhead to the junction with Carter Dome Trail was clear and generally dry with the couple usual mud pits along the way.

Carter Dome Trail: Clear to just below Zeta Pass where the snow started. By Zeta Pass the trail was under snow and ice with a reasonably solid monorail. At the lower junction of the Carter Dome Trail and Carter Moriah Trail went with snowshoes to the summit of Carter Dome.

Carter Moriah Trail: Heavily postholed by a group of hikers that went through in front of us. Used snowshoes to Mt. Hight and changed to Stabilicers back to Zeta Pass. From Zeta Pass to Middle Carter had snow and clear sections which would have made snowshoes difficult with frequent on/off. South and southwest facing trail sections were generally clear. Monorail adequately solid for barebooting.

North Carter Trail: Snow nearly all of the way to Imp Trail.

Imp Trail: Generally clear with some wet and muddy sections.

Bushwhack out: Interesting after-dark exit shortcut from the Imp Trail.

Special Equipment: Poles very helpful, snowshoes above Zeta Pass should still be used, light traction helpful, gaiters, patience required, sense of humor essential.
