Trail Conditions: Great Gulf Trail was packed out to the Osgood Trail. Osgood had 4-6” of powder over a packed base. Above treeline had about 1/3rd ice, 1/3rd snow, 1/3rd rock (typical Winter Presidential conditions). Madison Gulf Trail had lots of deep powder with some icy sections (especially near the top, where it's a few feet thick of water ice ).
Special Equipment Required: We wore snowshoes most of the way, except for most of us barebooting above treeline, and wore crampons for the first ½ mile down the Madison Gulf Trail (too much ice at the top, and too steep after that for snowshoes). It was a blast breaking trail “down” the Mad Gulf which doesn’t get much use in the winter. We also had a few problems following it, but we would fan out and easily find it after a few minutes...
Comments: Incredible winter day, with blue skies galore! It was so clear we could even see the dotted line that marks the Canadian border Nice running into Mr. Langley at the Mad Hut…
