Date of Hike: April 9, 2009
Trail Conditions: Took Ammo up, and it was hard-packed, almost perfect styrofoam conditions, with a light coating of new snow down low increasing as we climbed. We bare-booted it to the Gem Pool, then put on microspikes until the last half of the cone when we switched over to crampons. We switched from crampons back to microspikes about a .5 miles above treeline on the Jewell.
Above treeline there's a covering of snow over hard-packed snow and in some places, boilerplate. Until the temps warm above freezing there's occasional boilerplate to contend with, so with temps in the teens and with winds 25-35mph it was still full-on winter despite the calendar.
Special Equipment Required: Microspikes/stabilizers, and crampons on the last mile. Snowshoes not needed today, but will as the temps warm, especially below treeline.
Comments: A great way to spend a day with my friends Lou and Andy.
