Last year for New Year's Eve I stood on top of Mt. Monadnock, knowing I was about to embark on a year-long journey. This New Year's, I capped the year with a winter ascent of Mt. Washington.
The Tuckerman Ravine Trail required light traction up to the summer Lion Head Trail. The winter route is still closed. We put on crampons at one of the viewpoints along the start of the trail. Here the snow picked up pretty heavily for about 20 minutes as we approached Lion Head, which was totally awesome. Temperatures were extremely comfortable, and on a couple of occasions, only had a t-shirt under my jacket. Goggles and balaclavas kept us very comfortable through the steady winds that were around 20mph. We could stop for breaks without getting cold. This made for a overall pretty easy ascent. We arrived at the summit with full smiles, laughter, and cheer to bring in the New Year.
A thumbs up on the home stretch...
My first successful winter climb of Mt. Washington
