Which car would you recommend for remote bushwhacking?

I'd second the Tacoma choice and four wheel if you can get it. This summer I ran mine along the Obstruction Point road in the Olympics. A barely two lane dirt logging road aptly named at 6500 feet. It does fine on these Washington logging roads and not too steeply priced. I am getting 20-23 mpg...

Hiking Forums for Washington State, British Columbia, & Other Western Areas

Kevin, I climbed that a few years back. Several countable summits all with great views about 4k plus gain counting the dips between bumps, 5 miles one way awesome views. Close to the summit almost pooped a girl rode by on a mountain bike. She claimed to have ridden the trail up from the parking...

Car broken into at Ferncroft lot

You were lucky with the keys and wallet that could have caused considerable angst and trouble fixing. ( id theft bogus credit card charges, replacement door locks at home ) Makes you feel a bit better about what you did lose. I never leave anything in the car too dangerous. A state trooper once...

    documenting 46 high peaks

Wardsgirl, I just came across this thread and thought I'd offer a bit of perspective. Una answered well as did a few others. I have no experience with correspondents so I cannot offer what they are like. My letters were directed to Grace as she did it all. I thought writing reports were daunting...

    reports to get 46 patch?

The 46Rs in general are a laid back group. It is an honor system and they like people to send regular reports but it is not rigid. In your case a simple introductory note, I've climbed 45 and hope to finish this weekend, would generate a form listing the mountains. You complete this filling in...

    Maine AT question

Nope it was most likely me not you. The route I suggested was simply a parallel trail avoiding the rough terrain. I don't have my guide handy but I'm guessing there is no real change in distance. I'd never advocate driving and counting that and yes you would have to go back to claim hiking the...

    Maine AT question

Is it cheating? That's a question for you to decide. Considering the A.T. has a long history of relocations especially in Maine it becomes a moot point. The Bemis Valley Trail was once part of the A.T. so earlier thru hikers used that portion of trail. I doubt there is a serious difference in...

    Maine AT question

As I recall when I did the AT there was a trail, old AT I believed, that followed the valley avoiding the Bemis Range. It crossed Rte 17 and followed an old route to Sabbathday Pond rejoining the AT there. If still usable might be worth considering.

    moose mtn, lk placid parking.

Adk_dib It appears the lake trail is open by the generosity of the lake shore owners. If you can get someone's permission to cross their private lawn to get to the trail, it is a great hike. I'd hesitate to just walk through without asking first.

    moose mtn, lk placid parking.

I believe that trail from Whiteface Inn is a different route up Moose/McKenzie A little late for a reply but just in case anyone is interested here is what little I know. In July of 05' you could park in the turn around at the end of Chipmunk Lane. The "steps" are at the first house along the...

    New Adirondack Speed Climbing Record

The questions are, how long would it have taken him if he did it on his own? How long would it have taken without support staff? Finally ending the clock on the summit? Don't most of us walk back to the trail head before considering the climb over? You want to claim a record then do it without a...

    New Adirondack Speed Climbing Record

It was an achievement, no doubt. Most hikers when climbing the 46 drive to the trail head and hike to their destination and back. After a succession of trips they complete their goal. Setting a speed record to climb all 46 in the shortest amount of time is merely a stunt. It seems to me if...

    Mount Rainier: June 3-5, 2008

Congrats Paradox and Chip. No view to speak of but it seems The Mountain smiled on you, one day later and "ouch". The sun finally came out today. On Monday there were sixty mile hour per winds in south King County, not too far from Ashford. 18K homes without power, while a blizzard raged on...

    Topozone sold to Trails.com

I'm not sure where I found this perhaps northwest hikers board but anyway here is a copy of what I posted on ADK forum. On the top right of the page where it says SEARCH type in the name of the Quad you want. Select USGS MAP NAME in the drop down box titled SEARCH TYPE then click go. It will...
