How to pack a backpack...to correct forum

Packing your pack I suppose that some of this will depend on exactly how long you are heading out for and what time of year and where, but here are some thoughts for general overnight camping in the summer time: I have found that the bigger the bag I have, the more I tend to pack. I can...

    Children & nature.

Opportunity I'm not a parent yet, but until recently I worked at a summer camp for a good portion of my "adult" life. Despite all of the distractions out there, children given the opportunity and encouragement to enjoy the outdoors will still take advantage of it. A majority of the kids that...

    Moriah and the Carters

I know that this is a bit late in coming, but I wanted to get some info out to everyone about our trip up to Moriah and accross some of the Carter range this past weekend. The planned trip: Day 1, Park car one at Stony Brook Trailhead, up the Stony Brook Trail to Imp Mountain Shelter (about...

    Carters and Moriah

Thanks Thanks for the information. I'm going to keep an eye on things over the next couple of days. Looks like some of the snow has packed out a bit. I'll throw a trip report out there towards the end of the week when I get back.

    most broken uncooperative winter stuff

Water Filters When I still used my PUR filter, I would constantly forget to bring it to bed with me on winter trips. Those things don't function so well when they are frozed through. Don't use one anymore though, so the problem seems to have gone away. :D

Dealing with the cold - moved from Q&A

Wim Hof I saw a TV show about this guy, and he has 'set' a number of the human/cold immersion world records. He explained that he would 'train' himself by swimming in frozed water, and sitting in tubs of ice, but that a great deal of it was a mental thing...

    most broken uncooperative winter stuff

Thanks for the stove info I know that I have wandered a bit from the thread, but thank you all for the information. I thru-hiked the AT in 1996 with a MSR Whisperlite Int'l and never had a problem for the entire trip, routine cleaning and maintenance aside. After hanging up my boots for a...

advice please on section hiking AT this Nov.

Should be an amazing hike! You are in for a great time, and you should have most of the shelters to yourself this time of year (if you won't be carrying a tent). As mentioned before, watch out for weather down there. I always thought of peaches when it came to Georgia, and on more than one...
