Long Trail, Profanity Trail: Mt. Mansfield (Chin)

Hiked Saturday 8/2. Started up from rt 108 up the LT at 8:55 AM, reached the summit at about 10:25 AM. The caretaker on the summit said we were probably the 15th to cross the Chin that day (not bad considering he said 300 is a normal day). Fog was still in the valley to the east, partially...

    Carrigain 7-27-08

Good stuff B. How was the flat stretch before the elevation gain... a muddy bog? With all the rain the past week, and more this week... I'm wondering if the Whiteface Brook is gonna be roaring/unpassable. Anyone been up more recently?

    Mt. Tecumseh

I went up Tecumseh early on Sunday May 18th. Barebooted the whole way up. There were some snowy/icy spots, but no need for any special equipment.

    Jetboils in Winter

Just to clarify... The higher the propane content, the better the cold weather response will be. Butane is the worst cold temp performer, with isobutane in between.

    Moriah and the Carters

Yep was a great time, thanks for posting the report. We'll have to do it again once there's a little more snow on the ground and I get my stove situation worked out. Hey GNR nice avatar! I sent you a PM

    Jetboils in Winter

Oddly I had troubles with my pocket rocket and a brand new canister this past Saturday night at about 3300 feet, and high 20 degree temps. The stove didn't stay lit very long. Despite warming the fuel inside my second lowest layer for about 20 minutes. I have used it in more wintery...

    Mountaineering Moose?

I found a perfect* moose antler in the summer of '00 near the summit of Sable (elev 3519', which is a trail-less peak over by the Baldface Range in the northeastern Whites). *the rodents hadn't gotten to it yet

    Winter Sleeping Pad Advice

One trick instead of lashing your foam cell pad on to your bag is to line the inside of your bag with it. You're not supposed to blow into self-inflating pads in the winter because the moisture from your breath can freeze and puncture the membrane. I'm not so sure about it tho, I still need to...

Carter Dome - South Carter - Middle Carter, trail problems

Hey BigEarl we actually were up in that area this weekend as well. I think my friend (Becket1903) is going to post a full trip report once we get pics up. But I'll echo some of your sentiments. We came down the Carter Dome Tr from Zeta Pass on Sunday 11/13 and it was a mess. I think that...

    Winter Boots

I've been using all leather, heavy-duty norwegian welt Alico's in winter (and every other season). I just make sure to wax um up good before a winter overnight. But as the good Dr. alludes, there are tricks to keeping them from being frozen rocks in the morning. The most common trick is to...

Ice axe route in the NE

I agree with that spot 100%, I was up there on the northside of Lafayette in windy & whiteout conditions about 4 years ago and took that same slip. Didn't have an axe at the time, and fortunately was able to arrest with the crampons on my snowshoes (no ankle breakage due to the flotation acting...
