    Tarp tents.

Neil, my son and I did a few fast and light bushwack trips with a tarp for less weight. We each used a nylon "bivy" bag that was no more than a big nylon bag that we could get our sleeping bags inside of and was waterproof. It folded up to about soda can size. We used bug nets over our heads...

    Pine Martens

We had this guy steal a bag of Combos from our pack at Uphill leanto during the night then he came back to share breakfast with us.

Have you ever been attacked by a dog?

2 miles from mt house is the Finger Lakes trail and I hike/run/ski a certain loop many times a year. Very few people use it so it is nice and quiet. last fall I was running up the truck trail to the trail itself when a full grown german shepherd came running full speed down the road towards me...

Crossing IPB @ this time of year

We got caught at the rocky Falls leanto when the water in IPB rose quickly on 4/21/01. It was very dangerous crossing the brook about 1/4 mile below the falls and my son took this pic of me freezing as I risked my life  .

    Astonomy and the Adirondacks

I can remember a few years ago looking at the stars from the Bradley Pond parking area and the sky was almost white with them. My son and i still mention how clear that sky was.

    lower wolfe jaw in winter

I'll second what has been said above. It is probably easier in the winter from the Garden. A few years ago we did a ski approach up the Southside trail from the garden. We stashed our skis at the base of the trail to the Wolfjaws col and snowshoed from there to the summit. The trip back was just...

    lightweight bivy

I have a similar item that I always carry in the winter as survival gear and in the summer when I want to travel fast and light. Along with a tarp, you are pretty well set. Mine is not as fancy, it's just a big sack made out of some kind of nylon. No zipper, it's just so long i can pull it up...

    SW Hunter

Chris don't feel bad I've been up there 2 times also. I was using the same map with no detail and even climbed a gnarly tree, solo, in the winter once trying to see if there was any higher ground. I trampled all over before I decided I would really like to visit that mt again :) . Thanks for the...

    Sundog

I always see stuff like this and really enjoy it. Just tonight I saw a neat cloud/moon event that was awe inspiring. It pays to always look up and check out the sky. There is so many beautiful things going on up there that most people are too preoccupied to catch. Thanks for the link.

    ADK 3-day Shoe-&-Ski Haul

I also would highly recommend Flowed Lands if there is plenty of snow to cover the rocks and mud. Have done the Camp Santononi trip too, it's real nice. Another area that might work is the Seward Range. You could stay at Ward Brook leanto(or Blueberry) and ski the truck trail from there towards...

    Big Slide - My 46th

Congrats Shayne, glad you got to see that view. I have a matted panoramic photo taken from Big Slide hanging over my computer monitor that was given to me by my son. It's a great accomplishment.

    Wrist watch-altimeter-thermometer-etc.

Do a search and you'll find lots of info on these watches. I've had a Helix for almost 3 years and it has worked pretty well for what it cost. I've changed the battery a few times.

Packs and Snowshoes like oil and water

On most packs 2 bungee cords work just fine if you criss cross them. I have a pack that is specific for winter that has a pocket just for the snowshoes. It is a Eureka Pipe Dream that is discontinued now . The back has 2 huge nylon flaps with buckles that wrap around the shoes and under this is...
