    What is your "White Whale?"

East Osceola, believe it or not. I've tried to summit three times (twice in winter, once in summer) and have been turned back because of nasty weather or ill-preparedness. I'll get up there one of these days.

Willey what's its name? - MOVED FROM GB

Thanks for the link, and for relieving me of my confusion, as well as potential public embarrassment! ;)

Willey what's its name? - MOVED FROM GB

I've always said will-ee, but I'm a phoenetic kind of guy. Here's a question: how does one pronounce Guyot?

    Osceola’s Attempt – Big Learning Experience – 2/25/2006

Mike - the same thing happened to me about a month ago at the same slide. I didn't have the right gear, and I almost pushed myself too far. Glad you made it out okay. And hot chocolate always helps. I'm looking forward to June as well... and congrats again on the new baby!

    Solo hiking

I almost exclusively hike solo; it's just my preferred means of hiking. "Solo," to me, means that I don't have any companions on the drive up, at the trailhead, or during the hike, and I go at my own pace. If I stop and chat with another hiker I pass or meet along the way, which I am often...

what type of supplements do you take?

No supplements here, per se, but I do recommend filling a bottle with Emergen-C. I usually start drinking it on the drive up. It's a great energy boost, as well as a miracle for hangovers. ;)

What's the oldest piece of gear you own and still use?

I have a pair of binoculars that I inherited from my dad that are probably at least 40 years old or so. Although they add on a little more weight to my pack, and are a little scratched up, I just can't seem to buy a lighter and smaller pair. Nice thread!

    ANNOYING TAKE-HOME CAMPING HABITS

Whoa, of course! The guest room! That's a great idea, thanks for the tip. I'll see if she goes for it.

Which of the 48 4k'ers would you trade?

I couldn't agree more, but only during the summer days. I still would like to hike up the auto road in the middle of the night, as others here have done. :)

    ANNOYING TAKE-HOME CAMPING HABITS

My wife gets super annoyed when I wake her at 5:00 am to let her know I'm leaving. Instead of falling back asleep, she's lays awake wondering why her husband is crazy enough to get up at that hour of the morning. I suppose it goes without saying that she doesn't do a whole lot of hiking with...

    Boots and Blisters

Good point, and I agree; I should have clarified to be aware of how tight the wrap is. Most times, I find that the natural movement of walking loosens up any tightness that may incur from wrapping. I've found that if I only stick a piece of athletic tape anywhere on my feet, it tends to fall...

    Boots and Blisters

My biggest problem is that my socks tend to slip down into my boots after a while, exposing my Achilles tendons to the back of my boots. This results in quite possibly one of the most painful blisters I've ever had. Spaddock's got the right idea - use some athletic tape, but be sure to wrap it...

    Renting Crampons in Lincoln?

Greetings, winter lovers! I am presenting a rather mundane question to all the VFTT'ers out there, as a search of the site turned up little, and I'm hoping someone can help/enlighten me. Despite this weekend's forecast, my friend Joe and I are planning on hiking East Osceola from the Kanc on...

    Hard

Great thread! Two hikes come to mind: Summiting Adams via the Air Line, which was exhausting enough on a humid, 80-degree summer day, then having the bright idea of "running over" to Madison before heading down. I scraped up my shin pretty severely on the way up, and remember cursing myself...

    Mt. Moriah, 11/14/05

Grouseking - This time of year, everything seems to feel colder than it actually is, but I wouldn't be surprised if the wind chill was in the single digits at the summit, more likely the teens. I wish I could've stayed longer up there. I'd love to post some pics, but alas, I need to get...
