Does anyone know the trail conditions on Big Slide...both direct route and via Brothers? Haven't been up in the ADK since Nov. but planning a day hike tomorrow probably ascend via Slide Mountain Brook trail and descend via Brothers.
Overall how are these trails in the winter...will the ladders...
I have Leki Makula's...they slip occasionally but I'll admit that I don't take care of them at all...the outside of the tubes are considerably corroded. Someday I'll take them apart and sand of the corrosion and grease them...until then I can't really complain about one pole slipping approx...
I hope it is pop culture, that would indicate that some day it would again be unfashionable. I don't get out to be with crowds of people and socialize but for the peace, quiet and solitude. I don't mind sharing the trails, just not with people looking to improve their social image and who are...
My Koflach Arctis Expe's have been AOK since day one. I've been wearing them laced tight with a single pair of lightweight smartwool socks. I feel my inner boot move around slightly in the shell. So far no shin bang, no blisters, rare hot spot but nothing uncomfortable. Granted I've only...
I had the exact same problem on a pair of ski boots. No matter how loose I buckled them the pain was unbearable on the top of my foot near the ankle. The solution, reform the plastic carefully around the using a pair of pillars and a 450o heat gun. It only took about 5 minutes and I just bent...
Just to calrify I have the Lightning Ascents but I doubt that makes any difference...I haven't seen the plain Lightnings but I figure binding design is the same. Also, if you plan to do any steep stuff the lift bar does, in fact, work great...something to consider.
I have the Arctis Expe (size 11) and MSR Ligntings...they fit just fine with some room to spare. I would imagine 13+ might be a little tight...don't quote me on that though.
What dates were you in the park for? I'm going there this coming summer...I'm thinking over July 4 week but I'm worried about the bugs. How bad are they above treeline? My dates are entirely flexible at this point...going over July 4 would give me an extra day to enjoy the park though.
If this happens on Saturday I would strongly consider tagging along. Otherwise I think it's gonna be back to VT this weekend. Let us know what the plan is, thanks!
Just for the record, the Lightning's also have foot risers. I've used mine only once and they worked well, but they were also the first shoe I used so I have no frame of reference. The build quality seems to be top notch though and I like the sheer simplicity of the bindings.
I personally wouldn't hesitate for a second to go out during hunting season myself. I think you'll be fine on any legimate trail in any state/national park. But don't quote me on that.
Interesting article...though it seemed to pertain predominately to ORV's. I've heard the same, or similar, case made against hiking trails as well. Don't we think this is going a little too far? Any "erosion" or vegitation loss from an "illegal" trail, or worse yet widening existing trails by...
