    Lyme...bulls eye rash...spider bites?

OK, interesting. Just as an FYI, I had a circular rash on my ankle, just about at the sock line that I thought might be Lyme. I hike a lot and trail run where there are tons of deer. Anyway, doc took a biopsy and it turned out to be fungle. Just something to keep in mind.

    stash

Going to be doing a week on the Long Trail. While we are planning to be pretty self sufficient for the week, we do have a couple of road crossings and are considering stashing some stuff in the woods at the crossing to pick up when we cross. Partly to lighten our load, but also figured it...

    light backpack suggestions

Another vote for Osprey. I just got the Aether 70 and love it. Less then 5 lbs, great weight distribution and lots of good straps for perfecting fit. Just used it on two warm up trips and will be taking for 7 days on the Long Trail. Agreed that it is better with a bladder then with water...

Colgate Lake Trail and Escarpment Trail Maintenance

We were out on these two trails this past weekend as part of a trip to the Blackheads. The Colgate Lake trail has recently undergone a lot of trail maintenance, but I am curious about the reason for part of it. Overall there has been a lot of effort put in to installing water bars etc. But as...

Blackhead Mt, loop from Rt. 78 via old woods road

Agreed Mark, it is a lovely valley. And, yes, actually, I did notice standing water on the first bridge. I remembered thinking it was odd to be there, that it could not have been overflow from the creek because things had been so dry. There was a brief heavy, but brief shower that moved...

Blackhead Mt, loop from Rt. 78 via old woods road

It was a spectacular weekend in the Catskills. I was camping at North Lake with my non-camping friend and his twin 10-year old boys. After the last shower moved through around 4:30 pm Friday it cleared and turned into beautiful crisp clear autumn weather. We hiked to North Point Sat morning...

    MAGIC II -The Catskills gathering

Skiguy, another option to consider for the Blackhead range, without a car drop, is a bike drop. It is an ideal route for you to drive to the end of Big Hollow Road and stash a bike. Return to trailhead on Barnum Road and complete the through hike and bike your way back down Big Hollow Road...

    MAGIC II -The Catskills gathering

Jay, we actually met briefly while you were hiking Van Wyck last year after you had emerged onto the trail. We were on our way back from Table-Peekamoose, and we offered you a ride from the trailhead. Anyway, are these falls the same Vernooy falls you posted a trail condition report on earlier?

    MAGIC II -The Catskills gathering

sounds fun. I was just at the Sundown sites this past Friday. I'll try to make this. I might be interested in Woodhull/Van Wyck. Also, Jay, where are the falls you referenced? I know the LP drops off the NY/NY TC Map 43, but I looked at a topo and didn't see much in the way of falls terrain...

    Survivorman or Man vs Wild??

I know Jay has posted things about Survivorman quite awhile ago and in general this crowd probably is not a big TV crew, but I was wondering what folks who have seen these think. I am NOT a reality TV person, oh well, at least I wasn't until I stumbled on Survivorman 6 months or so ago. I...
