Appalachian Trail article w/ great photo of Franconia Notch

http://www.latimes.com/news/nation/nationnow/la-na-nn-tennesee-hiker-rescued-appalachian-trail-20121102,0,5988386.story Too bad there's not a mountain with this kind of view looking at Cannon Mt and Mt. Lafayette. (And too bad the article's about Tennessee.)

How is Success Pond road condition from the Berlin side?

Title speaks for itself -- has the road been maintained at all? Is it still passable by "normal" vehicles (e.g. Toyota Corolla) from Berlin to the Goose Eye trailhead?

help! recommendations for water shoes needed

I had a beloved pair of water shoes from EMS that have gone missing since last summer, so unfortunately I can't post a photo, just that they were low-cut red sport shoes I got maybe 5 years ago, with one of those elastic lace things. Now that I'm looking for a replacement, I can't find one...

is the diapensia in bloom yet? From the highways nearby (haven't done any hiking yet) the snow cover in the Presidential range looks lighter this year.

    Mont Albert beta

I need some feedback re: Mont Albert in the Gaspe. I haven't hiked in that area before and I need to relate it to my experiences in the Presidential Range. How does it compare w/r/t the trails around the Presidential Range in terms of - difficulty - bailout options / frequency-of-use I found...

Alpine Garden Trail 6/4/2010 from Mt Washington Auto Road -- denied

Went to hike down from the Cow Pasture to Alpine Garden but there was a large steep untrammeled patch of snow about 30'-50' across on the steep part, no easy way around. We had other constraints so did not attempt. Hopefully by now the way is clear. Diapensia lapponica, Loiseleuria procumbens...

    boardwalk traction

after falling down twice this wkend on slippery wooden boardwalks  , my thoughts drifted back to boardwalk traction. I was wondering what you all have seen for traction aids built into the boardwalks. Here's my list of what and where, please add to it! I saw one on a recent hike (around...

    Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail, 10/10/09

Well, the weather report said it was supposed to clear during the day, so I figured I would hike up to Mt. Monroe for one last Presidential Range hike this year. I made it to Lakes of the Clouds Hut, just to have some kind of goal for the day, took shelter for a moment on the lee side, stuffed...

    WMNF proposed parking fee increase?

Forgot to mention this when I saw it at one of the WMNF trailheads a month or two ago. The posted note had a feedback-seeking deadline of later than May 1 but I can't remember when. (Was there already a thread on the subject? I tried searching for it + had no luck.) edit: this link is more...

So did anyone go hiking on Welch/Dickey on Sunday after all the rain on Saturday? If so please post, as I'm curious how long it takes the rain to drain from the ledges sufficiently for an enjoyable hike.

gear storage / good source for carabiner-like substances

I am trying to set up a gear area in my house... got a shelf from IKEA which has a bunch of 1/2" diameter rods, and I figured I would get some carabiners to hang backpacks + such from it. So they don't need to be real weight-bearing carabiners. But they do need to fit around a 1/2" diam rod, and...

    sweat gets in my eyes

argh! This humid weather makes me sweat a lot, which I don't mind too much EXCEPT it gets into my eyes and irritates it and stings. I really can't figure out what I am supposed to do to alleviate the problem (carry a wet soft cloth all the time?!?!?).... any suggestions?
