Yeah, there were a few black flies in the Rangeley, Maine area AND every single one of them was in major bite mode. We've had our place for 14 years and this is only the second time that we ever encountered a black fly after mid-July. :(

Man, are those bites itchy.

No expert

but I think the season was pushed back this year due to the wet June. We have had remarkably bug free hiking until the last few weeks.

 There were many, what I would call, House or Garbage Flies on Osceola on Sunday, but they weren't biting. Biting Black Flies are smaller than what we saw, right ? Or were we just lucky to not get bit ? You can tell I'm not up there much in the warm weather.

There were swarms of black flies on Caps Ridge & The Castle Trails
on Sat Aug 15

I have the welts to prove it

Funny that they were not present on "The Link"
between the two trails
just on the higher ridge tops when the air was a bit more still ..
right when we were scrambling the Castles & Caps

Had to break out the DEET 1st time this season

On Jefferson's summit there was a nice breeze so they seemed to stay
away !

yeah. i'm still unclear on that issue. am i supposed to be wearing pants when i hike?
