    Movie location

I seem to remember (with about 90% confidence) that the mountainous parts of the movie were entirely or almost entirely filmed in North Carolina. I don't remember what they used for the river...that could've been the actual Hudson, I suppose. The scenery was certainly spectacular, though.

Seward Range Questions – Your help is greatly appreciated

From the DEC's May 15th High Peaks update: The gate on Corey's Road is open. Use caution as some soft spots remain along the road edges/ditch lines. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/9198.html

Balsam, Giant Ledge, Panther - 4/17/08

Only a few patches of snow remaining, mostly in shadier spots and/or above 3500'. No stabilicers or crampons needed. I used a hiking pole for the first hike (in case ice turned out to be a problem) but left it behind for the second. I looped over Balsam from Rider Hollow in the early AM, and...

    Panther Mt. (Catskills)

Excellent report and pictures! :) I nearly went for Panther on Tuesday myself, but (minor) illnesses in the family prevented me. I'm hoping that a similarly nice day opens up between now and the 21st, when I'd probably also take the trail over Giant Ledges--wow, they look quite steep from the...

    Blackhead Range - 2/24/08

My brother and I spotted a car in Big Hollow and ascended via Barnum Road. Bareboot (and dog) tracks petered out just above a steep pitch around 2500-2700' and we broke trail through possibly a foot of snow from there to the summit of Black Dome. We scraped some occasional rocks with our...

    Peekamoose and Table - 1/21/08

A few inches of hard-packed snow near Peekamoose Road increased to a foot or so above 3500' and between the mountains. Snowshoes might have been helpful above 3500', but the snow was hard enough to support weight even off the trail (they would've been a definite liability below Reconnoiter...

Big changes coming on Loj Road

Thank you, Little Rickie. :) I don't expect it to do any good, but one never knows. When I get a little time later in the week, I plan on reiterating my concerns via snail mail. I've always wanted a chance to be quoted in Adirondac... ;)

ADK Heart Lake Proposal - Pro or Con?

I'm still trying to figure out what the new trail(s) near Heart Lake will look like (assuming that this Plan goes through). The two most logical layouts I can think of are 1) an Ubërtrail heading south from the new facility to the old HPIC, splitting there southeast for Marcy...

The passing of a member of our hiking family.................

I am very sorry for your loss, Neil and family.

ADK Heart Lake Proposal - Pro or Con?

I am squarely against the Heart Lake Master Plan based on everything I have heard so far, though if stronger arguments are advanced than those I have encountered in Adirondac magazine or elsewhere I suppose I could reconsider. As skiguy has mentioned above and he and others have mentioned...

Big changes coming on Loj Road

Thank you for the links, Peakbagr. I have just sent along an e-mail voicing my objections and displeasure.

Big changes coming on Loj Road

I may change my mind later as I don't understand the issue(s) fully but my preliminary inclination is to agree with this. For anyone in the know--is this likely to add 0.25 or 0.5 miles (one way) to many of the most popular hikes in the area (particularly the McIntyres, Mt. Jo, and others which...

    Catskills - Twin & Indian Head - Sunday, 12/30

Nice pictures! :) I was hoping to snowshoe those peaks later in the month, but I expect the iciness up there will only increase with the warm weather forecast for next week.

Kaaterskill Falls was blown away yesterday

Gorgeous pictures there, Mark! I'm glad the falls have returned. ;)

MT. Jo - Labor Day 2007

I agree with you...Jo on a nice day is a wonderful hike for a 4 Y.O. (and for grown-ups). I'm glad you enjoyed your first hike in the Daks! :)

    Jay range (NY)

WOW, lovely pictures! :) I will have to hike Jay sometime.

    panther on grace day

Just to confirm...yes, this tree has been cut and yes, the massive ruins of it are very conspicuous from the trail. On the Panther Brook path I like to pump water at around 3500' where the path crosses back over from the left (south) side to the right. Sometimes there are dribs and drabs of...

Zealand Hut & Road - a few quick questions

Thanks everyone! :) We're planning to drop a car at Lincoln Woods Saturday evening and get a very early start in the morning from Zealand Road. It should be a lot of fun, especially if the thunderstorms hold off! Those are marvellous pictures, bobandgeri!
