    Cougar passed through ADKs

Rumor has it that one has taken up residence outside of Hudson, NY. I haven't seen it, but heard from someone who claims to have. And I don't know why she would lie to me, and she does seem like someone who can tell the difference between a golden retriever and a mountain lion.

Which trail has the best cell phone reception?

Nope, just a cartoon I found funny to brighten up a dreary day.

    Summer Hiking Goals

I'll be turning 48 in June, so my goal for the summer is to see how many of the NH48 I can do while I'm 48. Considering the shape I'm in it is doubtful that I will get to too many of them, but the challenge is inspiring me to workout more. So, we will see. Jeff 0/48@48

    Ways to Hike the 48

All 48 while you are 48 seems like an interesting way to do them. (I just turned 47 so I have almost a year to plan for this)

    Platte Cove Road Closed

Tried to go to Huckleberry Point this afternoon but ended up at the wrong end of a road barrier. Apparently, the town of Hunter has closed Platte Cove Road for repairs. There was no indication as to when it would reopen. Just thought I would pass along the information so that others won't...

    Sufferfest 2007 - 36 Hour Peakbagging Fun

I really like the idea of a two person, one car team with each team member going after different peaks. Half of the fun would be figuring out the logistics! Unfortunately, I am old and couldn't even function for 36 hours straight when I was young. I'm lucky to manage half of that now. I...

    High Falls Conservation Area, Philmont

I read about this place recently and put it on my mental list of places I wanted to check out. Thanks to your post I'm moving it up on the list and with any luck will get there before this great weather goes away! BTW - It's nice to know that there is someone else from Hudson on VFTT.

    Kaaterskill HP Best Route

I'd be interested! They are high on my list of hikes I want to do this year.

Who here is afraid of mud?

I used to be a tip toe-er, but I have seen the light and now plow right through mud. And since my shoes aren't waterproof the mud washing right in and then right back out again. As long as it isn't really cold, it feels kind of nice!

Formal Hiking Clubs vs Hiking Boards

I actually just wear regular running shoes, which have always worked for me on hikes. But my fear with an organized hike was that if I did convince the leader to let me go bootless, and then I ended up twisting an ankle I would ruin the hike for all the other hikers who were following the rules.

Formal Hiking Clubs vs Hiking Boards

When I lived in NYC I was a member of AMC for a long time and every time I would get one of their booklets in the mail I would scour it for potential hiking opportunities. And the ones I was interested in would inevitably be "Hiking Boots Required". And since I don't hike in boots, I never ended...

    A Tricky Scenario

For me, and I suspect many others, a lot of the fun of a hike is the planning that goes into it ahead of time. If I just showed up at a trailhead and hiked to the top of a mountain that I knew nothing about I think it would lack something in appeal. Therefore, I would suggest that instead of...

    Mount Madison Rescue

It is interesting how looking at the limited facts that we have from a different angle provides a much different percpective on this incident. Thank you Grumpy for your level-headedness! I thought the use of the phrase "to notify authorities" in regard to their use of their cell phones to be...

    Mount Madison Rescue

According to the paper, the rescuers didn't reach them until 4:30 AM, which is pretty close to when morning twilight would begin at this time of year. At which point the" "hikers" probably could have managed to hike out on their own. So the "hikers" apparently did have what they needed to...

Does color matter (when buying gear)?

If it was possible, all of my gear and outdoor clothing would be black, brown, dark or olive green, blue, white or khaki. Just like my civilian clothing. Maybe I spent too many years in NYC. I just don't understand pastel or bright colored outdoor gear. If I wouldn't wear it around town, I...

    Catskills on Friday?

I'm going to try to get out there tomorrow, but may go up the other side of Hunter so that I can do a shorter hike (and sleep in later). But with any luck I will see you somewhere along the trail.

    2006 - What's on the Table

I just moved out of NYC to Hudson, NY, so the Catskills are looming high on my list for 2006. My plan is to start with the Escarpment and work west from there (not in on trip, of course!). I'm really excited about not having to battle traffic to get to trailheads. Unless there is a backup at...
