    Jay Peak & Burke...

There was a good article in today's (or maybe yesterday's...) Caledonian that was very reassuring. Quiros is basically persona non grata in the area, but Bill Stenger is staying on as a consultant, and Steve Olson, who is running the place for the management company that was brought in seemed...

FYI: Northern Pass High Voltage Transmission Project

There were also a couple of odd land transfers in Dalton, Bethlehem and North Woodstock during recent months. Article here: http://www.pdf.investintech.com/preview/70bf1d46-a88d-11e4-b807-002590d31986/index.html

Barnes Field - Huge Group Memorial Day weekend

I googled it and there was a regional Northeast Rainbow Gathering on Tunnel Brook Rd in 2009, so I would think it's conceivable that it's a location they've used before; I suspect that what I ran into a couple of decades ago must have been a northeast one as well. I remember unwittingly...

Barnes Field - Huge Group Memorial Day weekend

I'm pretty sure I recall there being a NH gathering in the past. I think it was on Tunnel Brook Rd about 20 years ago or so?

    Old photo of Franconia Ridge

Here are a few pictures from slightly different vantage points. Tree growth, power lines, and limited time made it a bit difficult to take pictures comparable to the OP's. From the official viewpoint at Sunset Hill House: From the parking area across from Polly's; lighting/colors are a bit...

    Old photo of Franconia Ridge

Thanks -- my color is pretty muted on my monitor, so it wasn't clear to me that it was green.

The trees are even roughly the same size; it would be rather awesome if the dog were in both pictures.

    Old photo of Franconia Ridge

Maybe, but I think it's more likely a bit down the hill from Sunset Hill House. I would guess that it was taken somewhere between the current Polly's and the current Ledgeland, which is just up the hill a bit above Polly's. If it's clear tomorrow, I'll try to take and post a couple of pictures...

Okay, this is the exact same stretch of road! :) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Franconia-Mountains-from-Sugar-Hill-White-Mountains-New-Hampshire-postcard-/200731668424?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2ebc8a2fc8

Here's one from a similar angle, though the mountains appear closer in yours: http://www.ebay.com/itm/c1912-Franconia-Range-from-Sugar-Hill-White-Moun-/250637191952?pt=Art_Photo_Images&hash=item3a5b240b10

No, that's not any lake that's currently in existence. Echo would be much closer to the Notch. Maybe the picture itself is clearer, but my first guess would be that that's a field. If it is, in fact, water, it must be some sort of a man-made body from the Gale being dammed up somewhere...

Another North Country Prison in Lancaster?

As a White Mts. (but not Coos) resident, I don't think that broadband is the cure-all. The areas of northern NH that have good internet service aren't seeing economic growth, they're just not seeing the damage done in Coos by the death of the paper industry because they were already more...

    Stillwater Junction History Questions

Awesome! Thank you, psmart. If BeccaM ever gets that way-back machine she's got her heart set on, I just might have to hitchhike.

    Stillwater Junction History Questions

Okay, Dumb Question of the Day, but what exactly is a cable car? Like a mini-Tram? or a zipline of some description? I love the Stillwater Junction area. Though I did the East Side Rd. approach the last time I was there, my favorite approach is through Carrigain Notch and down the Carrigain...

"Warm smell of colitas (well, creosote), rising up through the air"

Just build a cairn out of the timbers and buckets, and paint the tarps to resemble a sign ("Campground: 3 miles") and they'll be gone by morning. :p

"Pierceing" Blue Skies on Pierce 9/11

I recall reading this here a few years back, so when we had a new pup, then five months old, a few years ago and I had him at the vet (in the Whites), I told the vet that we were going to wait until the following summer to take him hiking. The vet looked at me with confusion and asked me why...

Who can identify the species in this picture?

The white lichen is Reindeer moss; the red-capped lichens are British Soldiers.

Holden out for Noble - a Waterfall story

I think it's quite fortunate that Sarah Welch wasn't a mapmaker. She would have probably kept the S&R people busy if she were. :D

A Different Way to Shoot the Cannon Balls (Loop Hike: 04-Sep-2008)

I'm not familiar with the trail in winter, but it appears to be a few hundred feet below the ridgeline. I'll take a picture sometime when it's clearly visible.
