    visiting Baxter

Stan, all good and valid points. I totally agree about Acadia. We've been vacationing in Acadia almost every year since the late '80's. It still continues to amaze and impress me. I always see or experience something new. However, I have this yearning to visit Baxter and this would be the only...

    visiting Baxter

Thanks guys for all the info. Very useful. I just need to decide if the overall time spent to take this trip is worth it or not. Plus, I will need to board my dog. But on the flip side, this is the closest I'll get to the park as I live in western NY and I always wanted to see Katahdin...

    visiting Baxter

My wife and myself will be annually camping in Acadia this Oct. As a day trip, we would like to visit Baxter State Park to see Katahdin and hopefully moose. Unfortunately, my wife is not much of a hiker. Her speed is Acadia's carriage roads and not tough, rocky trails. Sometimes I can't say that...

    Shenandoah Valley Va. hiking

Great info! I am absolutely not a fan of crowded trails; I never hike the Adirondacks during the summer and fall holidays. The waterfalls would be cool to see and perhaps wildlife might be more abundant before the heat and tourist explosion commences.

    Shenandoah Valley Va. hiking

Yeah, I heard June can get quite hot. I prefer cooler temps for hiking; I wonder if I should plan on late April instead. Thanks!

    Shenandoah Valley Va. hiking

Hello, Is May a good time to hike in the Shenandoah Valley, as far as not being too hot or rainy? Should I expect snow in the mountains at this time of year ( Mid May )? Thanks!

    personal safety

The only "weapon" I have on my solo hikes is my sturdy hiking staff. The last couple of years my "little" girl Frodo, ( AKA Mrs. Goobs),a half rott/ half English mastiff happlily accompanies me on non high peak hikes. Believe me, nothing messes with the big goob. Nothing! :D More seriously...

    Bears: A brand new experience!

Last Sat. my dog Frodo and I were hiking the Uncas trail near Black Bear Mt., ironically enough, and I was thinking when was the last time I seen a bear on the trail (mid '80's, Lower Wolfjaw Mt.), when one crosses the path about 150' in front of us. I watched in amazement as it swiftly ran thru...

What have you found in the woods?

Back in the early '90's, while enjoying a very limited foggy view from Hough, my dog Alex came happily bounding up the path with a weathered, scruffy old baseball. Somewhere in the scrubby trees he came across this prized treasure. To this day, I was always perplexed why someone would tote a...

    hiking after knee surgery

Hey guys, thanks for your responses. Getting back into hiking shape concerns me, but I suppose that just goes along with the territory. And as my surgeon said, a lot depends on how the knee responds. Plus, he also said how much he cannot overstate on giving it as much time as possible to...

    hiking after knee surgery

Due to a torn meniscus in my left knee, I'm going to have this scoped in mid April to hopefully correct this. This, of course, will delay my hiking plans for the spring and early summer. My doctor says I will most likely be able to hike on level, non strenuous terrain in 3 weeks and hard core...

What's the oldest piece of gear you own and still use?

I still use a striped maple hiking stick I cut from a sapling back in the early '80s. It's like 5' tall and basically resembles the staff of Moses. It's been my loyal hiking companion on most of my high peak hikes. Great when descending and keeping my balance when crossing wet areas...

    acadia snowshoing

Hey guys, thanks for the info and advice. Having hiked in Acadia during the fall since the late 1980s I have gotten quite familiar with the trails. Some like the front side of Nurombega, Cadillac's west face, etc., would be extremely hazardous without the proper gear, experience and common...

    acadia snowshoing

Morning King Tut! Thanks for the input! I had a feeling that would be the answer. I don't have crampons, in fact never even wore them. My winter hiking/snowshoeing boots are the Columbia Bugabootoo. Are they compatible with crampons? I do have a pair of LL bean Stableicers (I think that is what...

    acadia snowshoing

I would like to do some winter hiking in Acadia this year (valley trails and peaks). Could I easily get by with just snoeshoes (with attached crampons) or would boots/crampons be the wiser choice?

Acadia National Park 10/28 to 10/30 Trip Report

Looks like you folks had a great trip. I was there the 2nd week of October and also camped at Blackwoods. I didn't get to climb the precipice this year as I just ran out of time. However, I still climbed Champlain via the Beachcroft trail. This starts opposite the Tarn by Dorr Mt. and gently...

Aerial Views of the High Peaks - via tour planes

I also found out thru personal experience, that it is very difficult to take photos or videos and still try to take everything in. I was usually so busy taking pitchers that I missed much of what I was flying over! :( For myself, if I ever take another flight, especially over a new area, I...

Aerial Views of the High Peaks - via tour planes

I took a few rides on those scenic flights originating from Lake Placid over the years during the summer, fall and winter seasons (especially spectacular!). As I recall, each flight took us between Marcy and Haystacks, in essence right over Panther Gorge, and then paralleled the NORTH side of...
