    WMG Redlining finish

FYI, I finished hiking all the trails in the White Mountain Guide today on Old Summer Club Trail. Also finished the 52WAV and T25 by default. 40 years of hiking, 30 years as a trail maintainer, it is a privilege to be able to spend so much time walking the trails of our forest.

NH "Most Scenic Hike" description seems short on intel

I had already guessed that the Franconia Ridge Trail would be listed as NH's most scenic trail in this clickbait. https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/travel-photos/the-most-scenic-hike-in-every-state/ss-BB14JgQG?ocid=msedgntp What I did not know was that it could he "done" in 5.5 hours, won't...

    Back up power for devices

I use AA batteries for all my appliances on the trail: GPS, headlamps, flashlight, transistor radio, and such. That way, if I run out of battery power, the interchangeability allows me to take a battery from the headlamp to use in the GPS, or take from the radio to power a headlamp, etc. Besides...

    Hiking gear in carry-on

Does anyone know if I can bring trekking poles in a carry-on? What about microspikes? Flying JetBlue to Seattle this weekend. I've brought both items in checked baggage before, but since I'm traveling light, I'm wondering if they're allowed in my allotted carry-on bag. Thanks!

    Parking on the Kanc

I thought the rule was that you had to park with all 4 wheels off the blacktop, so I'm curious to know what's going on with parking on the Kanc. I severely sprained my ankle in mid-November, (solo on the Hammond Trail, but I hiked out okay and already re-upped my fishing license for 2016- just...

    Wales and Western England

I just got back from spending two weeks in the United Kingdom. Besides the many touristy things I did in London, I also took several dayhikes in this beautiful land of various terrain. It was a wonderful time. Thanks to those of you here who offered advice on hiking in this part of the world...

Cannon via Lonesome Lake Trail, Hi-Cannon, Kinsman Ridge Trail 5/4/13

Lonesome Lake Trail was fine for the brief 0.4 that I was on it. Hi-Cannon was great- mostly dry. Switched to micro-spikes just before the ladder. Off at the ladder, back on in the snow flats. Great views from the top on this bluebird day- Camel's Hump, Mansfield, Dacks to the left...

    Backpacking in the UK

I am going to London in May and I have a couple weeks vacation to burn. I have been thinking that there must be some backpacking opportunities within reach of a train ride. I'd like to see some of the idyllic countryside, but an Internet search of 'backpacking in Europe' leads me to...

FOUND- Hiking Boots - Route 302 AT Crossing - New Hampshire

At the Webster Cliff Trail/Ethan Pond Trail Crossing of Route 302, there are a pair of Merrell Men's Size 12 boots. They look new. They were sitting in front of the Mile 47 marker. I left them there, since they could belong to a hiker who was on the trail today. Hope you get them back. Bummer.

Joshua Tree National Park... and other places... #2

I wasn't sure where I wanted to go next, but I thought I deserved a shower to get all the desert sand out of my crevices and clothes, so I drove north to the nearest town, Baker, CA. Ha hah! The only thing there worth mentioning there is the World's Largest Thermometer. I drove to Barstow...

Joshua Tree National Park... and other places you people sent me #1

On the edge of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, this road leads to the Mt. San Jacinto tramway in Palm Springs. I rode the pricy ($25) tram up the mountain. The views from the top were spectacular- good call, TomD! I brought my winter hiking gear, so I left the tourists and went on a hike...

Joshua Tree? No, not the album!

Hey VFTTers! I am going to be in LA the week after next, and I will have some time on my hands. I am thinking of heading to Joshua Tree National Park, Anzo-Borrego State Park, and/or Los Padres NF (aka Big Sur). Is one better than the other in December? What kind of temps can I expect? What...

Dry River Trail: A Trail Made of Awesome

I have long wondered what it would be like to drop into the void from Lakes of the Clouds Hut and spend some time in the Bermuda Triangle of the Northeast, AKA, Oakes Gulf. We left Crawford Notch in the rain on Saturday morning to make a long trip that would fulfill this objective and a patrol...

    Clay 8/15/09

I have long wanted to climb Mt. Clay for the Trailwrights 72, but deep snow and poor conditions above treeline always made me turn around. Since no snow was forecasted this past weekend, I decided to give it a try. My BF and I left the Jewell Trail parking lot at 9:00am. There was little...

A Wet Weekend on the Dry River

I have often thought it would be a great deal of fun to hike the length of the Dry River Trail. You know... the trail where everyone gets lost and needs to call for an evacuation. Friday dawned sunny and warm, so we decided that, having no plans for the Fourth of July, we would take a stab at...

Mt. Eisenhower Date: 6/13/09-6/14/09 Trail: Edmands Path and Mt. Eisenhower Loop Conditions: Very buggy with black flies on Saturday. Sunday's rain kept the bugs away. The Edmands Path is always a joy. Mt. Eisenhower Loop has numerous logs on it that are awaiting the completion of a log...
