Spring Perfection on the Franconia Loop

Haha nicely said! I guess if it was easy to get on that ridge then it would be even more crowded right?

Spring Perfection on the Franconia Loop

My girlfriend recently expressed an interest in hiking her first 4000 footer. The weekend forecast called for warm temps, low wind and blue skies so I took her on the Franconia Ridge Loop to climb Lincoln and Lafayette for a perfect start to the Spring hiking season. I got caught in bad...

The ascent of a slide near Greeley Pond

Last weekend my friends and I set our sights on Huntington Ravine but the weather report changed our minds. As a plan B we headed to Greeley Pond because we knew there were some unnamed slides in that area which might be fun to climb. We bush-whacked our way to a slide near the pond and did a...

    Camera for Climbing

I was in the same situation as you last year when I was planning for Rainier. I ended up carrying a Canon G 12 and an Olympus TG 820 tough. The G12 is a compromise between an SLR and a point and shoot and it takes great photos. When the weather is good I can carry it attached to the sternum...

Crystal Peak in Mount Rainier National Park

The weather your describing seems to be typical for that area. I could not believe we had perfectly sunny weather all week.

Crystal Peak in Mount Rainier National Park

Thank you! Its amazing that the height and elevation gain compare to Mount Washington. However the smoothness and pitch of this trail made it seem so much easier than climbing up Tucks or Huntington Ravine.

    4 Days, 10 Peaks, and a 48 Finish! 8.1.12-8.4.12

Congrats to Cameron! Finishing the 48 at such a young age is an amazing achievement! What will he do next? This story had fog, bears, toilet paper signs and of course a 48 finish...totally awesome!

Crystal Peak in Mount Rainier National Park

Even though I didn't summit Rainier during my recent trip out west; I did summit Crystal Peak. This summit made a great consolation prize at 6,596 feet with 360 degree views of the best scenery in the park. The snowfield and super smooth trails also presented a huge contrast to the...

An August Finish on Carrigain, and BIG Changes On The Signal Ridge Trail, 8/4/2012

Congrats on adapting to the hot conditions and finishing your grid! Humidity and heat is so taxing on the body, it makes me long for winter! This is one of the few hikes where you would actually want to walk into a windy summit!

    Presi Traverse 7/11/12

Awesome post! The one day Presi traverse has been a dream of mine for a long time and it is great to see someone making it happen. What kind of training did you do to be ready for this epic hike? Also what kind of food worked for you to keep you moving for that long? Congratulations! What is...

    Mount Rainier Trip Report

There are definite pros to going guided. In my situation if we had guides, then some of the team could continue ascending while others could have descended with a guide. Staying at Ingraham seems smart to reduce the summit day climbing by 1000 feet!

Time to update the rain gear shell

I rely on the EMS Helix Jacket. It is light and has all the critical features. For example, it has 2 huge chest pockets, internal mesh pockets for water bottles and ample pit zips. The hood also cinches down nicely in high winds. The below link will take you to my full review of the jacket...
