    Mt Cabot Trail?

I am aware of the dispute stemming from years ago with the landowner and the AMC regarding the Mt Cabot Trail. What is the current status of this? Is there a legit way to ascend the mountain on the Mt Cabot trail from the Lancaster side? or do you have to go all the way around to the York Pond...

Lost Pond Mountain ADKs 12/23 - The blackest coal in a naughty stocking

I brought enough safety gear and supplies to survive a nuclear firestorm and headed out to go for an ascent of Lost Pond Mountain. My bag was so heavy it felt like I was carrying a Sumo wrestler holding a pallet of roofing shingles. But better to be over-prepared than under. I left the...

Green Mountain Club just said to stay off the Vermont trails>>>>

I just got a notice from the Green Mountain Club recommending folks cancel their hiking plans and stay off the trails due to the Vermont flooding until they can do an assessment. It's pretty bad in Vermont. Our State Capital got flooded incredibly hard. From GMC: ---------------- To our...

New Hampshire snow in the 3000'-4000' range?

I want to get up to Northern NH soon and hike some old favorites in the 3,000'-4,000' range. Anyone know what snowpack remains at these elevations? Always mindful of trail etiquette during mud season, just trying to get a sense of the conditions up there right now.

New MSR Paragon bindings - good? resiliant?

I broke my MSR Lightning Ascents yesterday. (broken frame). So I just went down and got some new ones, but they now have these Paragon bindings, instead of the 3 strap toe system they had prior. How is this new system? Durable? Better than the 3 strap toe system? I hope the new system is good...

Moosilauke Carriage Rd Ski Trail conditions?

Southern Vermont received a lot of snow in the past week, but I am not sure about central NH. I was thinking of trying to ski the Moosilauke Carriage Rd ski trail. Anyone know if there’s decent snow up that way?? Thanks!

Original Katahdin 1853 painting at Yale

I visited the Yale University Art Gallery last weekend and they had the Frederic Edwin Church painting of Mt Katahdin from 1853. Really cool to see this original work in person. The Art Gallery also had an original Thomas Cole painting of the Catskills which was awesome.

    Any snow dusting yet?

I had heard there was a possibility last night of some snow dustings in the higher elevations upon the temperature dropping. Any magic fairy dust up there? Psyched for winter!

Sea shells in the middle of no where in the woods

Twice now I have found small sea shells while bushwhacking in Vermont off trail in the middle of no where. Does anyone have a theory as to how these could have gotten there? Do birds sometimes carry them long distances? Has anyone ever encountered this before? Are one of you trying to mess with...

Finished the Vermont 500 Highest List

I finished the Vermont 500 Highest. (List of John 300' prominence version) on July 10th on East Round Mtn 2,714' in Avery's Gore. It took me roughly 2 years to finish, but I already had a huge head start having done all the 3K and 4Ks in VT, plus many other sporadic mountains. Otherwise it would...

Dog: 1; Spencer: 0 (WARNING! GRAPHIC!)

I was hiking in southern Vermont last week and was on a rural public road almost back to my truck. Suddenly like 8 friggin' dogs come out of this house and slowly come down to the road, surrounding me like the Night of the Living Dead Zombies. 7 of them were quiet and just curious and sniffing...

Here's a list I don't think exists: Mountains whose summit is a giant boulder

Here is a list I don't think exists yet: Mountains where the summit highest point is a stand alone boulder or glacial erratic. I know of at least a few of them. Yesterday, while working on the Vermont 500 Highest List I climbed this 1,880' peak in Granby Vermont. The summit was an absolutely...

Are gas prices affecting your hiking?

I live in VT just north of the Mass border. Yesterday I drove to Canaan/Lemington Vt to hike what's informally known as Alder Brook Peak, approx 2,500' as well as some other peaks on the VT500 highest list. The gas prices in Island Pond Vermont were a full $5. I am so glad this wasn't in the...

    Remaining snow at high elevation?

I was thinking of climbing Mount Lowell again this weekend and I’m curious what amount of snow remains around 3,500’ or so in elevation in Northern NH? Trying to find a balance of climbing this peak when the snow is almost all gone, but before the worst of the bugs. Thanks a lot.

White Mountains on 1776 New England Map

I am a huge nerd for old maps and I spend a lot of time pouring over historic maps, particularly of the Northeast. This is from the Tobias Lotter map of 1776, which is considered a remarkable early map of New England. I found it really fascinating that the caption for the White Mountains is...

Any web resources for navigation and/or bushwhacking?

Looking for web links that are general informational/teaching sites about bushwhacking and or navigation skills in the mountains. This is for a project I am working on for someone. If anyone knows of any good web links, please post ‘em. Thanks a lot!

Avenging Hoffman and Blue Ridge; screwy-ed on Lewey

Adirondacks climbing TR: I climbed Lewey this past weekend. Cold. The wind was as if the mountain was spraying liquid nitrogen on me - who was the wart of a hiker it was trying to freeze off its surface. I had to break the trail the whole way since the Sucker Brook trail looked like no one had...

This is the most honest and hilarious ski area conditions report I have ever read:

Mad River Glen Good news for some: a soft opening of the Sunnyside Double is slated for later this morning. Show up sometime around 11 a.m. to catch first rides and free-range to a slew of conditions up top. Scouting missions in the last 24 hours found highly variable surfaces that would make...
