    1/6-7-8/2012 Colden, Gray and Skylight

I hiked in to Uphill Brook LT from Upper Works on 1/6. The trail to Flowed Lands had many exposed rocks and icy patches. Other than the lack of snow, there were no major issues with the trail. Crossing Flowed Lands was a bit sketchy once on the other side of the main body of water due to thin...

    Entire Dix Range In Winter

My hiking buddy and I recently went on a scouting trip to the Dix Range for our hike this winter. What we decided was that our plan of hiking in on day one to camp, climbing the entire range on day two and going back to our camp and hiking out on day three might not work for us. I was looking...

I am planning on going this weekend, just waiting for the details.

    snow shoe quick attachment

I just bought a new pack (an Osprey Stratos 40) which has two horizontal straps. I bought this pack with these straps in order to carry my snowshoes on winter hikes. I have used it three times this winter and it works great for carrying snowshoes. Also there was a thread not too long ago that...

    Garmin 60csx Question

I finally got a chance to try loading all the maps (topo & metroguide) in one set. I got everything to work so thank you for the help. :)

    Garmin 60csx Question

I also have the 1GB card and have had no problems with the loaded data. But, since this is somewhat on the same topic and others may have this problem I was wondering if anyone would know why I can only see one type of map on the GPS. What I mean is, I loaded topo maps and metro guide maps, but...

Winter shovel, nice to have or need to have

Last winter was my first season of winter camping, and as most of you know the snow depths in the ADK High peaks were not that great for most of the winter. There was only one trip that I would have liked to have a shovel for setting up camp. My question is whether or not it is a piece of gear...

    Two Weeks In August.....any suggestions?

If I had two weeks and wanted to stay in the Adirondacks I would think about the Northville-Placid trail.

    Parking fee at the Garden

I have not been to the Garden in a couple years and was wondering what the current fee is to park for the day?

    Alone in the dark...

A few years back I was doing a 30+ mile trip in two days so I was traveling light. When I stopped to bed down for the night I laid a cheap poncho down to lay on and covered with a fleece sleeping bag. Sometime during the night I woke slightly out of my light sleep and heard the sound of...

Trail Food - What do you bring?

what food to bring on a hike is my biggest issue. Many times I cannot think of what I want so I bring a little of this and a little of that and end up bringing too much. My last two hikes were 18 mi and 15 mi and I brought pb&j, cliff bars, granola bars, and that was it for food. It seems to...

    Cliff on Sat Jul 23

Anyone planning on climbing Cliff on Sat? I am planning on leaving from the Loj Saturday morning and day hiking Cliff. Just one more after Cliff to complete the 46. Also can anyone convince me to hike from Upperworks instead? It is about the same drive either way so the only issue is the...

    Night Hiking - Tips?

I would use a camel back or similar device if you don't normally. Hiking at night can require the use of two free hands much more often than during the day. Also you would not want to look for a water bottle in the dark.

Allen and Santinoni's(or one Tough Weekend)

Hey Al, sorry to hear about your bad luck with Santanoni on Sunday. There is no reason for you to feel bad about your trip. You had a pretty big goal and accomplished a lot in two days. I had a tough time on the way back on that road, I guess I should try to get out and run more. I only live...

    going solo

solo Well I have hiked solo many times. I mainly do it because no one else can go. Most of my friends have children and my normal hiking partner is a single father so he rarely goes. I have done mostly day trips and bring the basic things and usually some minimal gear to stay out if...

    Cliff in the Winter

The route to uphill brook lean-to from upper works is shorter if you are counting miles. From upper works 7.5 miles and from the loj 7.9 miles. I calculated the mileage from the ADK guide book. My first winter attempt to do Cliff I started from upper works with the intentions of climbing the...

    ADK High Peaks in February

I am back to school Jan 17 so weekends would be my only available time except Feb 22-27. I would be up to doing cliff and if your feelings change about doing allen by yourself I would also be up to doing allen also.

necessity of crampons and/or ice axe in the 46

 I have not been on many of the 46 peaks in the winter, and was curious when crampons and an ice axe would be necessary or could be necessary? I have been on 44 of the 46 so I have a good idea of what the main trails to the peaks are like. I guess the thing is, I am having trouble...

looking for partner to climb 46 adirondack peaks this winter

I would also be willing to do some of the 46 this winter. I have about 4 weeks off from college so anytime would be good for me. I have allen and bigslide left for my regular 46 so those are my priorities but I would be up for any of the them. I have climbed 4 peaks in the winter so far so I...
