    What should I have done?

Imagine what the 3 stooges would've done to this guy as they passed him. "ohh, so ya wanna play tough, eh......SMACK!##%!@! BOINK!#@x%#! TAKE THAT!!" :D

    How far do you drive?

1 1/2 - 2 hrs to the Adk high peaks areas 1 - 1 1/2 hrs to many other Adk peaks 45 minutes to the closest mountain, which is Azure Mt. I hike that one often because of its proximity and because it has so much to offer for such a quick climb. Oh how I wish I had a peak, any peak, in my back yard!

Question about creating a new waypoint w/GPSMap 60CS

That does sound nice. That's only with Garmin's MapSource, isn't it, or can you do that with other mapping software? And do any of Garmin's 1:24,000 map programs cover the Adirondacks? Doug, I wish you were my next door neighbor. Man, would I ever be tapping your brain and having you walk me...

Question about creating a new waypoint w/GPSMap 60CS

Well, I just did my own homework on this one and got brave and downloaded the "Trip & Waypoint Manager" CD that comes with the unit. Then I hooked up the GPS unit to the computer, opened the new software up on the computer, typed some waypoints into the program, hit the transfer button, then...

Question about creating a new waypoint w/GPSMap 60CS

AntlerPeak, the link you provided with those reviews of the software was extremely helpful. At the present time, I'm not really interested in loading maps onto the GPS. What I am more interested in doing is loading accurate waypoints into it by using large scale maps, and for doing that there is...

Question about creating a new waypoint w/GPSMap 60CS

Thanks, Doug. I have another question or two. Is Garmin's "Mapsource Topo" the best mapping software to use in conjunction with this GPS unit? I read that the map scale for their maps is only 1:100,000. Is this a large enough scale to make transfering waypoints accurate, or is it more accurate...

Question about creating a new waypoint w/GPSMap 60CS

I recently purchased a Garmin 60cs and am getting familiar with the user's manual. In the section on creating waypoints, it tells how to create one using the map panning arrow or with the MOB feature. However, nowhere in the manual can I find how to create a new waypoint by simply plugging in my...

Have any of you ever experienced virgin forest in the Adks or in the Northeast?

Thanks, everyone, for your accounts of the virgin forest or first growth as you call it. They are all totally interesting, and I hope to hear more. I was especially surprised but happy to hear that there's so much of it in the Catskills left. Maybe one of us will someday discover a secret...

    Giardia: Handwashing or Filtering?

Yup, that's exactly what I got at EMS. It's called "Hand Sanitizer" and it's put out by Atwater Carey. You're supposed to apply it to your hands and just let it dry without wiping them off.

From what non-high peak can you see the most Adk high peaks?

Neil, I was wondering the same thing about Snowy and I haven't hiked that one yet either, although I'm thinking of doing it sometime in the near future. Snowy would give one of those southern viewpoints, and it's higher yet than Vanderwhacker, although considerably further away. I'm going to...

Have any of you ever experienced virgin forest in the Adks or in the Northeast?

If so, where was it and what was it like seeing it? I'm not talking about old-growth forest but genuine virgin forest that was never logged, not even once. I remember reading an article once that virgin forest comprised only a tiny fraction of a percentage of all forest land in the...

From what non-high peak can you see the most Adk high peaks?

Actually, Ampersand and Goodnow were mentioned, but you make a good point about certain peaks being so close that some of its views are blocked by bigger peaks. Taking that one step further, I think that the non high peak with the most high peaks in its view would have to be a peak that's south...

    Giardia: Handwashing or Filtering?

It's actually one of the oldest steps in technology going and was very popular up until the discovery of the wonder drugs in the late 1930's like penicillin. Then those antibiotics became so popular that colloidal silver faded into the background. Now that modern antibiotics have little effect...

I didn't realize they still allowed jerks on the mountains

This guy needs to get an education in how to deal with people. Either that, or someone's going to turn the tables on him sometime and humiliate him in front of a group of people. That's the clincher. What a moron.

I didn't realize they still allowed jerks on the mountains

Not sure if I'm following you as to why he was so much of a jerk. When he "scolded" you for being in the alpine scrub area, was he real loud about it and embarrassing in front of the other people up there? Was he rude and beligerrant? Was he a steward who let his "authority" go to his head or...

From what non-high peak can you see the most Adk high peaks?

Mount Jo arguably gives one of the most dynamic views of the high peaks for such a short climb, but I don't think it gives a view of anywhere near the number of peaks that the other ones mentioned so far do. I haven't done Noonmark yet, but Hurricane's view is outstanding, although again, I...

From what non-high peak can you see the most Adk high peaks?

I'm wondering if it's from Vanderwhacker Mt south of Newcomb. My wife and I hiked that beautiful mountain yesterday and we were amazed at the number of high peaks we could see from the fire tower. In addition to Marcy & the Great Range, the Macintyre Range, Colden, Skylight, Colvin, Sawteeth...

    Giardia: Handwashing or Filtering?

I'm no expert on colloidal silver and basicly am going by what I've read about it and also a limited positive experience I've had with it myself. According to many of the people who promote colloidal silver, the reason we don't hear more about it is because the government and drug industry don't...

    Cell phones and hiking

I can relate to that. My wife shares the same feelings and she gets after me to carry one if I hike alone, despite my resistance. One other thing I'll say about hikers and cell phones. I think most hikers are the types of people who are aware of the importance of solitude and will keep their...

    Snake bites

Snakes are the most remarkable animals going, and there is little to worry about as far as encountering harmful snakes in the Northeast. Even in the rare instance of getting bitten by a rattlesnake or copperhead, chances are that you're going to come out of it with little more than being...
