    Lost hikers on Franconia Ridge

Sad to hear this news - I read the story and my heart sank. The first thing I thought of was I hope it was no one from VFTT. Its a long way from those kind of conditions down here in NC, but I am missing the whites especially at this time of year.

    Hiking in Slovenia

    Waumbek and Crampons

They are strap on - but I was just worried about the bar on the bottom - it just hangs out there in space along the curve of the sole. FWIW, I have only used crampons a couple times and am so far from being an expert it doesnt even need stating :)

    Waumbek and Crampons

Thanks for the replies. I wish I could use my G 10s. With the curve of the sole on the Winterras, the bar is just too exposed. I have a feeling it would snap within minutes. Maybe I will just pick up a pair of stabilizers.

    Waumbek and Crampons

Planning to climb Starr King and Waumbek this weekend and wondering whether I should bring crampons. I would prefer to wear my new Merrell Winterra (comfort factor) and I dont think my G 10s will work with the Winterras. I know a lot of people have done this hike in winter on here, so I am...

    Exercise

If you are going to do weights, stick to free weights. Use dumbells. I would suggest pilates - strength for your core is even more important as you get older.

    Zealand Rd. bridge/alternative route

Heh, I am such an iffy skier that I am sure I could turn that into a nightmare. When I go up later this year, I think I will likely stick to snowshoes...

    Hale in Winter

Just remember you cant park at the trailhead during winter...that makes it a little less quick.

    Zealand Rd. bridge/alternative route

I have never been up in the Zealand area in winter. With the bridge work completed, will they plow up to where the trail for the Sugarloafs and the (?) Trestle Trail begins? Or does the winter route start from the bridge right off the main road?

Middle and South Carter Sat. 1/7

Dont forget Mt Hight. People suggested that to me this summer when I was going through there and Hight had the best views on the trips and imho the best views I have seen in the Whites outside of the Bonds...
