    Algonquin - May 6th

    Loj to trail junction mostly dry then trail becomes wet after first few hundred yards, as it starts to climb. Plenty of stable rocks and roots for secure footing at the more muddy sections. Snow starts just before waterfall and continues up to first cairn. Yak tracks got me up but I would have...

    EMS 30% E-Mail Coupon

    no doubt about it. My two season old denali ascent snowshoes needed servicing. I went in to have them shipped bach to MSR for in warrenty repair. The store simply exchanged them. Last winter my 20 year old Mountainsmith frost fire II pack ( also purchased from ems) tortured my somewhat older...

    Bivy camping anyone?

    Hello Tramper Al Appreciate the response and the question. I use the vbl with a -20F EMS down bag. The vbl was purchased to help keep the down dry but you might have something there, the bag still feels airy and cool without the vbl (evaporative cooling?). The bag still gets quite damp, I guess...

    Bivy camping anyone?

    I usually winter day hike solo . Thinking also of using leantos more to save weight when solo camping. I am thinking of getting a bivy. It could be a useful emergency tool and a lightweight alternative to a fully occupied leanto or double as a sleeping bag cover in the leanto under windy...

    Slr camera on a winter's hike/climb

    I picked up the Lowepro top load bag suggested in this this thread. It would not fit the hipbelt on my pack, I wore it on the sternum strap with an elastic safety strap going to a beaner on my shoulder strap. It was always right there tempting me to take too many pictures :o Thanks

    Whiteface?

    Hello KenG Definitely second the advice given so far. Was up esther last weekend and found the trail and snow to be perfect for snow shoes. The crampons and ice axe will not get any use. Snowshoeing this week in the adk's has been superb. Have a blast.

    Thanks to all for your input, I have a few ideas to try. My old olympus digital camera took great shots, untill the lens and viewfinder ices up on bushwacks. My olympus film point and shoot is all weather but it still ices and the picture quality could be much better. Besides picture quality...

    using vapor barriers

    I use vbl 's (plastic bags) in my winter boots and would not winter hike without them. I use one in my down bag along with one top and bottom thermal layer, boy do I wake up wet, quite warm but wring out the thermals wet. I can usually change thermals or throw on additional layers before I...

    Daytime Leanto etiquette/protocol/practice

    Thinking of camping in the Colden lake Flowed lands area and going for a few last winter 20004/05 peaks. I have always managed to camp away from popular areas and always in a tent. Considering using a leanto to save weight. Is it standard practice to leave ones belongings (sleeping bag and other...

    Affordable yet good quality crampons??

    I also endorse the AustriAlpin Stubauials. They are light, very packable ten pointers' that can easily adjust from heavy plastic boots to flexible mickey mouse rubber boots. No tools required. Under $90.
