    Best winter Sleeping PAD?

It's time for me to freeze again, so I thought I'd find out how everybody else does it--or avoids it. I've used self-inflators, closed cells, etc. with bad luck in Jan, Feb, March. I haven't tried combining the two yet--just heard about it. Are there any good 4 season closed cells that you've...

    Headlamp Input

Hey, Looking for opinions on the best headlamp. I've got a Black Diamond Gemini that I've used for a lot of night hikes but it just isn't great. I'm looking for something wicked powerful that's not going to crap out on me 4 hours into the hike. Any help appreciated. Pete O

A Rock Shoe for ADK Slide Climbing?

Looking for opinion/ recommendation on a good rock shoe for slide climbing. I've tried crampons, hiking boots, sneakers, dirty socks, etc. Looking for something sticky yet comfortable for a day on a slide. thanks.

    Whiteface

As the trail report mentions, the woods were winter, the trail was not. As you cross the ridge at Marble, bam, the winter starts. It was a long six months. I scooped up a handful of snow and bathed in it, then ate a bunch from a hemlock. Great to be back in winter. I just wanted to say a word or...

North Fork of the Boquet and Cascade

Took a day and a half off for a two-part adventure into indolence. Parked on 73 and headed up the Boquet to the falls about a mile in. I was lucky to have from 9 to noon or so alone at the falls. I burned a roll of film in about 5 minutes, swam in 4 or 5 pools and napped in the sun. After...

    crampon bindings: Scottish or Modern?

Occasionally my crampons have twisted off to the left or right at the heel. Wondering if anyone would weigh in on the pros or cons of the newer loop- and-buckle style bindings of mountaineering crampons versus the old "Scottish style" strap binding system. I use the Scottish style bindings on...

Dix from 73 via the slide

This was the biggest and best slide that I've ever done. I would not do this one in summer. I would be soiling myself over in the cripplebush. The traction yesterday was excellent. Soft snow on top with hard base about 6" down. Even the ice was a little mushy making for great footing. As I...

    Bennie's Brook Slide again

I went back to Bennie's today to finish the lefthand slide I had stopped short on about a month ago. It was tons of fun and all that. There's a waterfall/icefall some 10 yards from the top. That was the only place I skirted into the bush. I popped back out on the other side of it and gingerly...

LWJ via Bennies Left hand Slide

The Left side has a considerable bushwack (cripplewhack) at the top so I never intended to exit and find the trail. It's more fun to come back down the slide when possible, rather than hiking back down the trail. That's why I ditched my snowshoes, poles, extra water at the base of the slide...

Tulip Slide on Giant Sun. 12-11

I am no climber in any sense of the word. Just a 50 yr old hiker who occasionally gets a whiff of some intriguing new food and follows the scent right into the frying pan. The Tulip Slide is billed in Rock and Ice as being the easiest of all slides in the western bowl of Giant. I've been up...

Google Earth Satellite Views of the Mtns.

Hi, Does anyone have any tips on how to use Google Earth to find hi-res, in-focus views of the slides, etc. in the mountains? I can find my pickup parked outside my house, but I can't get a good in-close view of the mtns. I have the feeling they told the satellite camera not to bother with...

question on avalanche conditions Keene Valley

Wondering if anyone can direct me to a good source for up to date info on avalanche conditions for Keene Valley, specifically slides on Giant? I remember reading about a ranger in that area who is an expert on just that, but I don't know how to contact him, or how to find this info on a day to...

    LWJ via Bennie's Brook Slide

Wicked fun hike. One of the best I've had. The slide was a river of ice that looked like a still photo of a river. Every undulation of rock and falls was exaggerated by mounds of rippling ice. The colors were cool, also--golds, greys, azure. For the approach I pulled out my old files and found...

    Gothics--Ribbon Slide=TrueNorth Slide?

Looking for info and clarification: Is the Ribbon Slide the same as the True North Slide? (I understand the TrueN slide to be the narrow slide lefterly of the north face proper.) Would the snow conditions this early in the season be good for the True North Slide? Any info appreciated.

    Catamount (thanks)

Thank you for the directional help for Catamount. Just an update though: The actual trailhead does not have any marker tape at the present time. There is a red paint blaze on a tree at the trailhead. The pink marker tape further down the road is not the trailhead. More on the Trail Conditions...

    Catamount Mt. Access

Just wondering if anyone can confirm or deny the descriptions on the road route to the Catamount trailhead. It seems I'll be heading down a small grade 2 miles from an intersection and looking for orange tape. Does this sound right? Or...has anyone gone in from the Taylor Pond road direction...

    Gothics North face (right side)

Anyone have any info on the conditions of the right side of the north face of Gothics? I've heard from more than one source in the past that the right side close to the trees is "hikeable", i.e. no ropes or screws, etc required. Thanks.
