Mt Chocorua and Liberty Cabin via Champney Falls Trail
Date of Hike: 1/18 - 1/19/2010
Trail Conditions: Packed snowshoe trail to treeline, windblown and ice covered rocks on summit ridge, Very difficult/dangerous to follow fresh snow traverse from summit to Liberty Cabin. Loose snow and insufficient ice to grip rock ledges. Once at the Liberty Cabin there was a packed snowshoe path leading down the Liberty trail side.
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes useful, crampons essential on summit ridge, snowshoes essential on traverse from summit to cabin.
Comments: Optional - my traverse from the summit to the Liberty Cabin was on fresh snow and I was not able to find/follow the trail at times. The next day the snow was too loose and not enough ice on the rock ledges to follow the same route back to the summit and bushwhacked off trail on my return. Follow my footprints at your own risk. Broke trail down the loop to Champney Falls on the way back on Tuesday.
