Trip report: We originally planned on hiking up Mt. Moosilauke today but the weather forecast called for cloudy and rain so we hiked up Mt. Moriah.
We got to the trailhead by 7:30am and were on the trail by 7:45am.
Legoboy (our 9 year old son Ryan) led the way. He led for a while but the spider webs across the trail started to bother him so I led.
We took a break at the first lookout. We had great views of the Northern Presidentials and of course Mt. Washington was in a cloud.
Soon we were hiking up huge boulders. They were tricky in some spots due to water and a green moss growing on the boulders. Legoboy and some difficulties but he made it.
Several times on the way up Mt. Moriah, we thought we were close to the summit. Then we would head back down and climb back up again, just to go back down.
We started to get hungry but we wanted to eat lunch on the summit so we pushed on.
After a few long ups and downs, we saw the Mt. Moriah sign. Thank God.
Soon we were on the summit. There were several others on the summit. We chatted for a bit and then they headed down.
We had the summit to ourselves. We sat down and had lunch.
The weather was great and the views were great too.
Soon several other hikers came up.
We finished our lunch and headed back down.
Going down the boulders was much easier then going up them. We were making good time. On one of the last boulders, Legoboy slipped and rolled half way down a boulder. He scrapped his knee but he was ok.
On the way down, about a mile from the trailhead, we spooked something off the trail on the right. We heard a big crash, and then something ran away. We didn’t see what it was but we expected it was a bear. We banged our trekking poles together to make noise. We never did see what it was.
Soon we were back at the car.
This was Legoboys first 4k, but after this one, he wants to wait a bit before he tries Mt. Washington.
