Spaderman, The Great Pumpkin & Roy Boy started out Sunday morn (3/2) with optimistic goals to reach North & Middle Tripyramids. For The Great Pumpkin is was a repeat winter climb from years past. For Roy & I, it was a first winter attempt having gotten them in other seasons.

We left the Kanc. on the Pine Bend Brook Tr. around 8 with no signs of earlier attmepts. Going was slow as the snow was 8-12" on most of the trail. Around the 1.5 mi mark, Andrew from Fall River joined the mighty threesome with hope of improving our chances for the day. We plunged on thru the numerous stream crossing, some bridged, most not. The day was sunny with minimal wind. At 2.2 mi. where the trail ramps up the brook valley, The Great Pumpkin turned into squash with the snow depths now around 12-16". Roy being the good scout turned around with The Great Pumpkin. Spaderman & Andrew continued on to be joined shortly by Mike Foster. It couldn't have been at a more fortuitous time as the snow depths were approaching 24".

Mike, Andrew & Spaderman slogged it up the valley, bushwacking most of the time as the blazes were buried. We reached the ridge around 1:15 with Andrew & Mike doing all the front work. (May the sun always shine on your hikes, guys!) At 1:40, Spaderman had hit the wall near the top of Scaur Ridge Trail. The ridge wasn't too bad with snow depths around 6-12". Mike later posted his successes (& Andrew's too I hope).

For those seeking the Tripyramids in the near future via Pine Bend Brook Tr., your path is paved with gold. Snowshoes a must, leave the crampons in the car. Pay close attention to the stream crossing. And enjoy the butt sliding coming back down the valley.
