I've only used Trangia alcohol and Optimus / Svea gas stoves in the past . I recently picked up a Markill canister stove thinking it would not be as quirky as the other two but I find it flares up just as bad as a white gas stove .

This is my first canister stove so I'm not exactly sure what the problem is . It only flares up when turned to high . Temprature when problem occurs has been between 40F-60F . It is also very hard to control the flame to simmer , which is one of the reasons I bought it . I know they have problems in the cold but I thought this was well in their range .

I do not have an exact answer for you, but that temperature range should be fine for a cannister stove (I have a camping gaz) - I believe you need to be well below freezing to have any real problems...
I find that my stove runs best at just a touch below full power...I figure as long as the flames reacharound the pot it does not matter if it is on full or not. Kind of the same on simmering - takes a lot of trial and error to get it right where you want it to be...to low and it will flame out...
I have never had a flare up problem with mine...
