Cannon and Northeast Cannonball via Lonesome Lake and Kinsman Ridge (29 Jan 2012)
Trail Conditions: 3/4" fresh snow over hard crust over deeper snow (all the way to the summits). Packed highway to Lonesome Lake. Narrower track up to the col. Steeps on Kinsman Ridge were steep w/ ice, but enough snow to bite into, with one especially tricky section. NE Cannonball had seen much less traffic. I overshot the summit for the lookout and the tracks continued on - no idea how far.
Special Equipment Required: Light traction below Lonesome Lake. Either crampons or snowshoes with aggressive traction for the steeps in the boulders. Ice axe came in handy too.
Comments: Crust plus dusting was great for looking at animal tracks (weasel, rabbit, small rodents, grouse) and scat (weasel). Just past the lake many trees had been clawed up and bark removed by one or more bears.
Related trails: At least one large party today went down Hi-Cannon.
